If you're interested in this position, please email a copy of your resume
and a recent photo of yourself. Thank you in advance.
Location: Seoul, Gangseogu
Compensation: 1,500,000 Won/Monthly |
The important parts are 3PM~8PM (Mon~Fri) and 1,500,000 Won/Monthly
Also important but missing is number of classes.
We can't determine if this is good or bad until we see the number of classes. Do you teach until 6 and have dinner? Is one class 40 minutes or 60 minutes? Do they expect you to teach immediately after a class is finished or are there breaks? |

A few short years ago, hagwon jobs with that schedule paid 2.2 a month with housing and flights and visa sponsorship. Without that, it's not a good deal. |

I guess teaching in America is a part time job then. Hell, they only work 180 days per year. |
I imagine teachers in the US work as hard as UK teachers during term time and well deserve their vacations - some of which are taken up by pre-term planning/meetings/training by the way. |

Such days constitute no more than five days per year (which are canceled out by all the paid sick days, personal days, etc.). |

So why don't you go and be a teacher in the US then? It sounds great. |

I plan on it. For most of us, EFL in Korea isn't what it used to be. |

Exactly what I was thinking.
We also don't know what they want the teacher to do. Maybe they just want someone to press play on the CD player and look nice. If there were only three 50 minute classes during that time, and no preparation is necessary, it might suit someone who just wants to make a few Won on the side.
My guess is that they're looking for an immigrant wife who has time on her hands. They didn't say that the person needed to be a native speaker of English. These jobs are usually targeted at Filipina wives, in particular those who haven't learned Korean well yet and have no job. |

It is only 5 hours of work, even in America that would be part time. |
No it wouldn't. Teachers in America get prep planning periods. and a lunch break. They get paid a hell of a lot more too.
I knew a teacher in an alternative high school. (Because it was alternative, he was paid more.) On "A" days he had two 90 minute classes. On "B" days, three. (Meaning he worked for an average of three hours and fourty five minutes per day.) He made great money and had more days not working than working. |
What are you talking about. This job is from 3~8. That is 5 hours with no prep time. You don't need to go in early. It's not like you are coming in at 130 amd leaving at 9. If that was the case, then no way would I take the job. This is a part time job so 1.5 mil. I say is pretty good and leaves room for someone to do extra things i their own time. A teacher in an American school definitl
ely works longer than 3~8pm. |

Not by much.
What is the school day for elementary school?
8:30-2:30? Six hours?
And it's not year round. Plenty of paid vacation.
I'd say the "part time" Korean job has more hours. |

It might be for F-visa holders. It's only 5 hours a day. I would have tons of time to do privates with that job. |
As the job is 3pm to 8pm you're busy the most useful hours for private lessons.
[Better to have a full time job during the day time (public school or university) then do privates at night.] |

1.5 for 5 hours a day is terrible any way you slice it. You can get an after-school position that is 1-5ish for 2.8 to 3.1ish (including housing allowance) -- prep time is negotiable. |

Those after school gigs usually involve prep and do not provide housing, severance and most importantly visa sponsorship. Those jobs are for F visa holders or an E2 with permission to work a second job (most do not get permission).
It depends on how much of the 5 hour day you're teaching. If it is just a walk in walk out job like a lot of conversation teaching jobs in Korea Then it is still ok imo. It's probably a combined 4 hrs of contact time. With no prep it isn't bad considering all one needs is a BA. if you have an MA TESOL and years of teaching experience then yeah it stinks. But I don't think the job ad is targeting that type.
Actually what suck is that TESOL jobs back home that require certs and relevant education don't pay much more than that after deductions. And you will have a lot of prep and marking because you're doing more than teaching conversation.

So many crappy jobs being posted. Who would do this? Some offer visa sponsorship but most don't. 15,000 an hour? This job below is just an example, but there are many like it.

Could be decent for someone attending a language program in the morning, anyone looking to actually save some $$$ could just do an afterschool program for twice the pay |
