Some people get fatter from living in Korea.

This is my third time in Korea, and every time I have lived in Korea I have gained weight. Then when I go back to Canada, I lose most of the weight I gained in Korea. |

i know people personally who have put on a lot of weight since coming here. saw some girls over the last weekend at Ansan Rock Fest i saw for the first time since orientation in Feb, and man they have absolutely ballooned in the last 6 months. |

Westerners tend to drink way more in Korea. Major contributor to weight gain. |

I am back stateside now and have gained 15 pounds.
They say obesity rates in United States children are actually down, that is just what I heard.
I think Westereners are usually a little more heavy because we eat more sugar....?? |
It's probably down because children couldn't get any fatter. Sort of like maximum velocity for your belly.
And yeah, go to any American supermarket and what do you see...garbage...just junk food EVERYWHERE. These places are food deserts. It's just oil, sugar, and salt made to look like food. And then there's McDonald's, Wendy's, CocaCola, Twinkies, I mean...it's impossible not to be fat in that environment. |
Every supermarket in the world is filled with junk food. Real food stays on the perimeter of the supermarket and processed food is in the aisles. |
Not necessarily. I think if a study were done to compare the percentage of food that was processed within a supermarket, there would be great variation from country to country. The US and Canada are particularly bad because companies are sooo good at making processed food appear to be healthy. This throws a lot of people off. It'll say something like "gluten-free, fat-free, low-fat, organic, or something" but it'll actually be the most processed, calorie-rich piece of garbage in the aisle. Just look at bread. I never knew what real bread was until I came to Korea. "what's this, bread goes hard after 3 days?" Yes, amazingly I just thought bread was supposed to last for weeks because I never experienced unprocessed bread. And meat, in the US it's hard to buy a unmodified piece of meat. Usually it always had coloring, preservatives, spices, salt, or something else added to it, even though it might appear untouched to the eye. |

It's not rocket science... Which countries do Westerners mostly come from in Korea?...
Compare that with this list of the top 10 obese countries...
http://m.ibtimes.co.in/top-10-obese-countries-world-obesity-517210.html
If the westerners here mostly came from Denmark or Switzerland it'd be a different story..
Plus you just notice it a lot more when in Korea...
Question sorted. |

We understand now that the effect ration of nutrition to exercise is 80:20.
I'm surprised foreigners don't lose weight when they come to korea as the food is generally better quality (traditional meals).
Beer is probably a major factor.
So the obvious question i ask myself is... okay why aren't korean's fat too? they drink as much if not more beer no?
Maybe it's just me but a lot of the women around here are what i consider 'skinny fat',, ya you're overall weight is not bad but the composition of what they have is all JiGgLy.
Westerners are a generation ahead of koreans when it comes to obesity. We've been practicing this fine art for 30 more years. And we're good at it.
I'm also surprised fat foreigners would leave america at all. God knows there's a lot of walking over here. |

When I was in NYC last year, I was impressed by the average shape of people. Tons of people out on the street jogging. I think these sort of cities keep ya walking, and that in turn helps when it comes to weight management.
Every out of shape/obese person I've known drove everywhere. |

Getting in this a bit late.,.and the following may have already been said...
However, I honestly do not see many overweight people here in Daegu among the foreigners. Of course there are a few, but certainly not to the point that anyone could say "many foreigners are obese"
Out of 20 foreigners I may see, 1 will be overweight/obese. The vast majority are thin to the point that they need to get into the gym, or otherwise quite athletic and involved in one of more of the local sporting leagues.
With that said however, I will say that of the overweight group, the majority of those tend to be female |

Yeah, where I live now, DC, has one of the lowest obesity rates in the States. It also has one of the lowest rates of car ownership in the country.Throw in an educated, young populace, and it isn't that big of a surprise. And yes, joggers everywhere too. |

I've done a few months of no booze, and then I expanded it to no junk food or soft drinks. I dropped at least 10 pounds afterwards and would've dropped more had I gotten intense exercise.
I'm also avoiding processed food as much as possible. |
