Calling them Asian could get your butt kicked. |
You're just racist. And so are they, Australians are Asian. |
I'm not racist. I'm geographically correct.
Test it out for yourself and call some Austrailians Asian. See what happens. If you're American they'll probably forgive you because they know you can't help it. |

One of my colleagues was a prof. from West Virginia. Yeah, the type that grew up hunting and fishing. However, his wife was from Singapore and so they went back and taught at SNU. He couldn't wait to get the hell out of Singapore after a few years of being there. |
SNU is in Seoul. |

Actually, when I was there it seemed like in a lot of places most of the Australians actually were Asians. |

Actually, this is true. When I referred to an Australian guy as Asian at a bar one time, he got really pissed. But when I told him I was from the states, he totally changed, eased up, and apologized. The guy even bought me some beers. I asked him if everything was ok in his country these days. After all, I had seen those Mad Max documentaries years ago and my heart went out to those people. |

The guy is probably pretty young, and just doesn't know any better.
Singapore is still a dictatorship, but probably the best one to live in if you so choose. |

Yes. I'm just asking exactly how it's oppressive. I remember reading before that people were sent to jail or kicked out of the country for organising a strike, but what makes it oppressive to live and work in general. Just a simple question. I was just looking for someone who's lived in the country rather than someone passing judgements who may not have set foot in the country.

Depends on what you define as young! But less of the patronising thanks very much. I'm miles away from Singapore, how am I expected to know what life is like there? I'm just asking
Look at Spain, a democracy yet they're going to ban abortion. |

For a foreigner it is not oppressive. For a Singaporean, it is mildly oppressive usually. It is much less oppressive than China, or most of the other countries in the region. In my experience the most oppressive part was the censorship, but it's pretty easy to get access to real news on the internet. I really liked living there, and in many ways you could make the argument that it is less of a police state than some western democracies. |
