In 2010, I was on a GEPIK contract at a high school when pretty much the same thing happened to me. Lucky for me, I had a collection of the my previous hagwon owner's family's phone numbers on hand. My co-teacher came with me and let the NHIC official give the adjosshi an earful, who agreed to come in at that moment and pay up. We agreed to go 50/50 on the backpay and 400,000 won disappeared from my next paycheck...

And it gets worse. Three months later, NHIC did some digging all the way back to 2004 and discovered I hadn't paid for a few months in various spots over the years. They agreed to take just 300,000 more...

Feels criminal... but the law is the law. I suspect NHIC only does the digging on public school teachers... so the longer you had worked for shady hagwons before that, the worse off you might be...
