The use of the Korean Times is unlikely to rise above a material with with to line the bottom of one's birdcage. To use it as a base for statistics is elevating to a status it has no pretensions to.
Yes I know they said it was based on a claim by Euromonitor. I wonder how Euromonitor got that data and what criteria they used to verify the data.
Well here's another claim by CNBC which lists the top ten countries by alcohol consumption. (2013) South Korea's not on the list.

And that seems backed up by the WHO

Every now and then, a survey proclaims Koreans the heaviest boozers on the planet, but I've heard Russians and Europeans overall drink the most pure alcohol by liter per year.
My uncle has a foreign liquor store but he says biz is down partially due to changing mores about drinking in Korea.
Korean beer is also weak and foul tasting. |

I didn't read either of those links, seeing as how the last time I checked your links to things they were to an article from 5 years ago about a study that last happened 10 years ago.
Can you give a summary? |

For some reason I was looking at some alcohol consumption stats a couple of months ago. What struck me at the time was the huge difference between women's vs. men's consumption. Men by far drink more than women here in Korea. Don't have the source to that readily available-it's there if someone whats to find it. |

I don't have any source to go on (I'm not obsessed with them like TUM is) but that would go without thinking much about, right? Men generally drink more.
TUM, dig up a link to support this. |

I'm waiting for a study that says World Traveler voted No 1 Korea hater on Dave's ESL Cafe. |
Maybe that study will come out at the same time as the one showing andrewchon voted as the wittiest poster here. |
More likely scenario: there will be a study that show andrewchon to the most dim-witted poster here. |

I don't drink but every person at my school does. When we went on our summer holiday together everybody from the principal to the bus drivers were smashed. I mean falling over hammered.
I felt like I was in bizarro world. The slurred speech, weird hugs and groping, etc. My principal was bragging to the westerners that he used to pound 12 bottles of soju a day when he was younger. All the men nodded in agreement.
You don't have to drink if you don't want to but I definitely see the pressure to do so is fierce. |

Can you give a summary? |
Certainly...since you asked so nicely.
Both links I posted (which were from 2013 and 2012 respectively) refute the claim of the OP.
One lists the top ten countries with the most alcohol consumed and South Korea is nowhere to found. The other link states that the WHO ranks overall alcohol consumption in Korea to be 13th in the world. Still very high but again nowhere near the 1st place.
Given that both links are from fairly reputable sources...one wonders how exactly did EM come up with their statistics? |

Does it take into consideration the millions of religious folk in Korea who don't touch alcohol at all? If it does, and they still rank at the top of alcohol consumption, that's really saying something. |
Well put....interesting.... |

From what I can gather from the article, the Euromonitor survey states that Koreans consume far more alcoholic liquor than other countries. It doesn't refer to all alcohol consumption. This seems to agree with your link that showed the WHO report of Korea as #1 in hard liquor consumption. It was probably just the KT article that claimed this means that Koreans are the heaviest drinkers in the world, not the Euromonitor. They are defining "heavy drinking" solely by hard liquor consumption.
This is probably just a case of alcohol preferences. Koreans drink a lot of hard liquor(in this case soju) over beer/wine compared to other countries. Add that to the fact that soju is less alcoholic than most other hard liquors and you have the "heaviest drinkers in the world." |

in all my travels i'd have to say from my observations that koreans are easily the heaviest drinkers. and sure soju has less alcohol in it than a typical hard alcohol, but i'd still wager to say koreans drink more actual alcohol than any other country. |
