Agreed. Simply put it up your anus and walk through customs normally. Chances are they won't make such a dedicated search. I've done this several times (approximately 10-12x), and it's definitely worth putting it in your anus rather than them finding your watch/signet ring/gold nugget bracelet, etc, and either stealing it or making you pay a fine/taxes. There's a good chance that if you don't do this, then they might steal it and/or make an excuse about you smuggling something and then keep it for themselves. Better safe than sorry. It's your call, but I think $2000 worth of gold and silver in the crap chute is better than a $2000 crap shoot loss. What do you guys think? It's also not a bad idea for you newbies to do the same with American dollars since they can easily be confiscated the same way. Better sore than sorry I say.

A former co-worker's husband used to be an executive for GM Korea and bought her a $12,000 Rolex. She made the mistake of declaring it once, because every time after that, whenever she entered the country, they asked her where the watch was, thinking she sold it illegally or something similar. This happened for the 4 years she was here.

There's no reason to declare a personal item in case it's cases this headache.

Nobody spends $3000 on a watch because the battery on their phone sometimes gives out. They spend $3000 because they want to look impressive.

Unfortunately $3000 is neither here nor there in luxury watch terms. Not expensive enough to impress someone who really cares about such things, but far more expensive than is necessary for a functional timepiece. Maybe it'll impress someone like a second rate accountant, if you are lucky. If you were really loaded with cash (the image you are aiming for, it seems), you wouldn't be worrying about import duty. Stop trying to live above your means. Now run along and have a nice day.

you must be confused. part of your response seems to be referring to the op and part of it seems to be referring to a comment i made (two different people and posts...). in regards to your response that seemed to be referring to me you need to carefully read before you reply. my comment about a watch being useful when the phone battery died was in response to lucas saying that no one needs a watch these days. there was no mention of the watch needing to cost 3,000 dollars. my 20 dollar timex has done an admirable job of keeping the time over the years and kilometers.

as for your reply that seems to be responding to the op, it's funny that you seem to know so much about luxury timepieces if you find them such a ludicrous way to spend money. if you actually knew about luxury timepieces you'd know that 3,000 is about entry level money to get a mechanical movement from a swiss manufacturer (most like a swatch eta movement), so no, it's not far more expensive than is necessary if you want to own a mechanical movement timepiece.

if you were really loaded with wisdom (the image you are aiming for, it seems), you wouldn't be worried about what the op wants to bring through customs. stop trying to think above your means. now run along and have a nice day.
