Are we really arguing over whether or not Koreans drink a crapton?

in all my travels i'd have to say from my observations that koreans are easily the heaviest drinkers. and sure soju has less alcohol in it than a typical hard alcohol, but i'd still wager to say koreans drink more actual alcohol than any other country.

I've travelled a bit as well and saw much worse drinking habits in Eastern Europe. Not saying they consume more but things I saw there but haven't seen here are - guys having a shot or two in a pub/cafe on their way to work in the morning and my boss opening a bottle during the day whenever a guest came to the school. It wasn't uncommon to be force fed vodka in between classes.

So far in two pages, we've had:
-the OP link a legit article talking about legit stats collected by a legit organization.

-OP is quickly called the biggest Korea hater on the board.

-The stats don't count because vodka has a higher %.

-The stats don't count because Koreans over-exaggerate (and no other countries do).

-What about the religious folks?!

-The newspaper is not good.

-Stats don't mean anything! Here are other stats that you should trust more than those stats! Don't question my stats!

-Eastern Europe is worse!

-Men drink more than women. (?)

-Why are we even talking about this?

Keep on trucking eslcafe. The Olympics are coming, there'll be even more opportunities to defend the honour of this great peninsula.

Does it take into consideration the millions of religious folk in Korea who don't touch alcohol at all? If it does, and they still rank at the top of alcohol consumption, that's really saying something. Confused

Wine is the blood of Christ yeah? Maybe Soju is the blood of Buddha?

And surely, we can add in another point that somehow links Hitler and Nazis to all of this. Wink

This line from the KT article is crazy:
"Among the main reasons for the huge intake of alcohol by South Korea is the existence of soju which accounted for some 97 percent of the world’s distilled drinks."
Just think of all the vodka that goes into all of the mixed drinks at bars and dance clubs all over the world. Soju still accounts for 97% of the world's distilled drinks?
I must be reading something wrong.

I've noticed in Korea and also a bit in Japan, some westerners will drink a lot more than they previously did due to difficulties with cultural adjustment. Some will then rationalize it by thinking everyone drinks more in this culture. Aside from actual alcoholics, I've seen very few Koreans actually binge as hard as some foreigners.

And I've known Koreans who were really good at faking how much they were actually drinking. I had one director who was a pro at sneaking out to the bathroom and making himself vomit. When doing the 'one-shots', 'bombs' etc., you'll notice a lot of food on the table, without which many Koreans won't drink.

However, the denial and blame with regard to this can be intense. It's a bit like the alcoholic who will vehemently insist that anyone having a couple of drinks with him/her has to have the same affliction.

Earlier in the thread I said there was a huge difference between rates of male-female consumption rates here in the ROK but did not have the stats at hand. Some posters were shocked, shocked I say, that men drink more than women. In Europe the difference between genders ranges between 2X to 4X the rate, so yeah, everyone knows guys drink more. But this is what I was talking about:

Quote:
A recent epidemiological study illustrated that the lifetime prevalence rate of alcoholism in the Republic of Korea showed a remarkable sex difference: there was a 20- to 30-fold higher incidence in the male population than the female population.

http://www.who.int/substance_abuse/publications/en/republic_of_korea.pdf

20-30 fold higher. WTF! That is a difference worth noting (I think). Also worth noting is the paper is from 2001 and is about alcoholism-not consumption (although to be clear, alcoholism is a product of consumption), so maybe someone can source something more recent.

Carry on Daves.

LOL, the best one was the assertion that a Korean newspaper can't be trusted to report facts ABOUT KOREA. Now that's a new low. Funny stuff.

I think both sides are guilty of selectively credibility of journalism sources. The rule for both seems to be "If it supports my argument, its fact. If it contradicts it, the Korean Times/Herald/etc. is a tabloid rag".

the best rule is 'if foreigners say anything negative about Korea SteelRails must counter the argument.'
