They arent responsible for anything. The document will say something to the effect of "I promise to be responsible for _______ students tuition and living expenses"...but its not enforceable. No university goes around seeking money for services they haven't provided yet. Students pay tuition up front, so if they didnt pay...the university would simply not enroll/renew their student status. Students all over the world in every country of the world enroll, then end up having to drop out because a student may not be able to pay tuition...but if universities were getting the money anyway, students wouldnt be dropping out.
It is not the same as say...a cosigner for a car or home. If the student were to break the laws or need emergency flight home, that again has nothing to do with the university, and since the sponsorship document is needed by the university (they are basically doing the screening for immigration in this case) there would be no responsibility for the sponsor. |

Wow. No kidding. I thought it was enforceable (seeing as how it's a government doc). The potential sponsor certainly believes it's enforceable and hence would be reluctant to sign. How do you know it's not enforceable? Who told you? |

Noone told me. If a student didnt have a sponsor and had the money themselves (no matter the country) they are not obligated to pay for tuition if they suddenly dont have the money and drop out. So the same would be true for the sponsor.
If what you are thinking were true, professors all over Korea would certainly not be acting as a sponsor for the students they do, and parents all over the world would not be paying for education..etc etc.
Johnny A enrolls in Bentonville university. In his 3rd year, he comes up short on tuition and has to take a semester off to work (this happens quite a lot in Korea to Korean students/military service...etc) In such a case, they do not have an obligation to even return to school, much less pay for school they are not attending. |
