I've been in Korea for 4.5 years on an E-2 at 3 different schools and have yet to go back. When and how do I claim my pension?

What country are you from? Have you been teaching at public schools? Have you checked your pension balance with the pension office?

How the heck can we tell you where the pension office is when you haven't even told us what city and dong you are in?

Also, maybe type in National Pension Korea in google, go to the website, and check for yourself.

http://english.nps.or.kr/jsppage/english/main.jsp = main site
http://english.nps.or.kr/jsppage/app/english/contact/contact_01.jsp = offices.

As an American you are entitled to a pension refund.
Having only worked in hagwons it is unlikely that you were ever enrolled into the NPS. (

-A good sign would be if you actually had some pay slips that showed a deduction for the NPS. (shows that you were probably enrolled and there should at least be some money on your account)

-Failure to have ever paid your share of the premiums (4.5% of your salary every month) is a bad sign that you were never enrolled and won't get anything back (a loss to you now of about 10 million won).

Anyone can check on your pension balance at any time at any pension office with your ARC. If you're on vacation that's a great time to check. Those in hagwons should check constantly. Public schools are better about paying in but you can always check, anyway. Do it ASAP so you can take action, if necessary, before you are closer to leaving Korea.

You should also get an official statement from the pension office every year sent to your work place. I got my last statement in November, it tells you how many months you have been paying in and how much you have in your account in total.
