There's no M2 in Gangnam, and B1 (B One) is in Itaewon.

The Hongdae area is packed with small bar/clubs that play this kind of stuff. It's a younger area, mostly Korean university students and FOB ESL teachers who like cheap drinks and cheaper thrills.

Am I the only one who didn't know what a FOB was? The urban dictionary entry is quite good:

I'm a hiphop/trap/dubstep kinda girl.. add some top40s, a little electro, I'm good to go. But my music needs to have some beats for me to dance to.. haha

Gangnam

Phantom -
The night I went, the event was a "Block Party" so I can only go on that, had lots of OLD SCHOOL beats, random Diplo & recent songs here and there. Not sure what your definition of "really nice" was meant to be but, NO A/C (except in a random corner) so it got sweaty quick.. Had to leave for some air a couple of times. At the time, I just got a normal-ghetto-vibe from it (maybe I was expecting more from a "gangnam club"?). I'd give it another shot .. if I could go for free.

NB - 3 years ago.. only thing I can remember was what it was P A C K E D with guys. No room to move, but music seemed decent to dance to.

Harlem - 3 years ago.. E M P T Y haha we would switch between NB and here depending on music and the level of crowded-ness.
>>But when I recently walked by, I think Harlem may have changed into something else.."Between Night and Music" would be the rough, awkward translation. It's a place for Korean 80's babies to go and listen to their version of Backstreet Boys and Britney Spears (I love Shinhwa, no hate)

Answer - 3 years ago.. My friends and I tried to dance in our "circle" but it got awkward because everyone was dancing in the same direction/looking towards the "stage" like a concert and hopping/jumping. It definitely seemed "nicer" deco-wise but lots of electro/techno/I honestly don't know how to group the music, I don't really listen to it.

Hongdae

Cocoon - Mix of electronic and hip-hop <seems about right.
3 years ago.. I went here three times within one month. It was always the default, bc it was worth my time. Mixed crowd (saw lots of young'ns and non-Koreans) and mostly top40s, latest kpop, electro, etc.

Itaewon

B1 - Went here two weeks ago before heading to Cakeshop. Had a decent crowd, but nobody really danced. Lots of head-bobbing, and pushing. Was not my scene, I can't really do electro/trance.. They had a bouncer checking dress-code... but I was in a loose white t-shirt, jean shorts, and wedge sneakers. shrug.

Cakeshop - Hiphop! I went when Dumbfoundead came to perform. It is super small. The vibe I got was dingy basement idk. Everyone was in very casual, "typical hiphop" clothes, hats and all. Great music.

___

My general experiences at the clubs. Some were from three summers ago (2010), and some from the past two months. I'm planning on tackling Octagon & Answer sometime soon so I'll try and update if I go.

More updates on hiphop clubs, please!
I'm also trying to stop by LUCIDREAM in Itaewon sometime in the future

I agree. I usually like helping people, but sometimes it's just not worth the effort.

This is what makes you unhelpful? An abbreviation? All the badmouthing and complaining on these boards and this is what constitutes going too far? Man, asking for help from you is really a crap-shoot.

I've never had tax added to a listed price in Korea.

That is to say, I think listed prices are usually tax inclusive.

Tip? In Korea?

But then again, I've never been to any of these big clubs. Maybe they do things totally differently.

Metro Bar in Itaewon is always a great place for a drink.

By the way, is Spy club in Itaewon still there?

Minimums for Octagon are probably around 250,000-300,000 for a VERY basic set. Like a standing table for four people in the upstairs lounge. Downstairs next to the main floor, sets are around 500,000 - 800,000 I believe.

Answer isn't what it used to be and might be a lot cheaper these days...not sure why you would want to get a table there.

If you're really feeling like a baller, there are VVIP sets at Octagon that go for over 3 million KRW.

Of course, Octagon is still a really hotspot, but Vanguard's VIP section was ridiculous last weekend. It will be again this weekend too. Might want to scope that out.

Spy was replaced by Opium in November, but it had be deeeeeeeeeead in the water for years. It was about time someone came in there and made an attempt to breathe life back into the venue. It just couldn't keep up with the development of the neighborhood.

Opium, sadly, can't seem to either, despite having a decent interior and good staff. They got really confused with their music policy right off the bat and never really created a strong brand. They put on drum and bass DJs in the middle of house sets, etc. No cohesion in the booth can really drive customers away. That, and being located next to one of the rowdiest bars in the neighborhood (Gold Bar) and also the twits from London 24 or whatever that yell at people who are two feet away from them with a bullhorn. Good customers tend to just look down and push through that section of Itaewon as quickly as possible to get to the more upscale venues.

Thanks for the informative post! We definitely cannot afford VVIP areas, but we are looking for a place to sit and some bottles for our friend's birthday. I sent you a PM. Thanks seoulsucker.
