Hey guys, hoping to get some feedback from someone who may have done this. So many mixed messages from recruiters, immigration etc.
I was in Korea until September 2013 and went home for 3 months.
I applied for and got a D10 visa in my home country (the UK) and am now in Korea. To get the D10 I had to provide an apostilled degree but no criminal check.
So, my question is, if I get a job offer and need to change to an E2 do I need to show an apostilled criminal check to immigration in Korea or, seeing as I have a legal visa, will they just change it to an E2 on proof of contract? |

| Have you been out of Korea for more than 90 days? If so you will need new documents. I left Korea with a D10 and needed a new criminal check when I transferred back to E2 (because I was out of the country for over 3 months.) |

| I wasn't out for 90 days but the thing is I didn't leave with the D10 visa, i only got it in the UK. Does that make a difference? |

You did an out of country D-10 application - lucky you. Yes you will need a CRC as you let the previous visa lapse. Generally new visa means new paperwork. Your D-10 to E2 transfer will be more akin to a new job/visa. If you are lucky the immi official who is dealing with you might take into account previous CRC OR they might not do the procedure correctly. Get a new one just in case. |

Wow, I heard it was hard to get a D-10 out of the country.
I also heard you can do the D-10 to E-2 switch after one office visit to immigration. But after doing the paperwork, how soon can you legally work at the new job?
I have a D-10 also, and I'm hearing different things from different sources. Online, I read it could take 2-3 weeks. When I called immigration (before leaving Korea), they told me it took a week. However, my friend who did a D-10 to E-2 switch earlier this year said she could work right away. |

The D10 to E2 switch is immediate.You can work straight away. Your status is updated on Immigration's system the day you apply to change back to E2. Maybe you will have to wait to get a new or updated ARC. |

I'm in the midst of this situation, changing from a D10 to an E2. Just to let others know, the switch for me was not immediate, so it might be a case by case situation, or maybe it depends on how busy they are.
At the counter I was told to wait for an 'E2 confirmation' which would come via text message from immigration, and had nothing to do with the ARC. When I asked how long, she said usually 3 weeks!
BUT, when I called immigration later, the person said it could take up to 3 weeks, more likely a week, and at the very least 3 days.
Still, everyone I have talked to at immigration has said I have to wait for the E2 confirmation before I can legally work, so that's what I'm going to do.
ALSO, there was a huge fee increase this year! Change of sojourn now costs 100,000 won (up from 50,000) and printing a new ARC is now 30,000 (up from 20,000). Getting these fees reimbursed might be something to ask for when negotiating a contract. |

Hey John, I was also told that "3-week-wait" story by a recruiter who confirmed this with Immigration. See my previous posts on the D-10 Visa. But that was not the case. Two days before my new contract I returned to Korea. I went to Immigration with a D10 and I left with an E2. My ARC was also updated the same day, there was no waiting.
Maybe some rules have changed since last year but if what you say is the truth, then that makes the D-10 a lot less useful:( |
