Hi,

I've just recently been recruited by Say Kimchi Recruiting and offered a position with Saymook SDA private elementary school. I have seen mixed reviews. I am yet to be placed but can anyone tell me anything regarding how the schools are run and their personal experiences?

Thank you

My location says Hongseong but I am actually in Ireland right now. Hongseong was meant to be my original location until the school decided there would was no room for another teacher at this time. Thanks

I'm assuming you mean Samyook (not Saymook). They are a religious organization (Seventh Day Adventist). Sorry, I don't have any other info for you though.

I worked there for 2 years. (This was 5 years ago so it might have changed) They are a Christian school that keeps the 7th day Sabbath (Saturday). You only work 4 days a week M-Th. Friday you don't have any kids and leave at noon. The school is on the college campus. Its really close to Seoul. Your apartment is in a teachers dorm style building near the school.

If your not a Christian I would avoid the school. You won't be happy there no matter how many perks and how great the pay. IMHO

I was told that I wouldn't have to partake in religious dealings. Which I'm ok with but I have an open mind anyway. What are the heads and co teachers like? Are they ok with pay on time and is there a large intake of foreign teachers at each school?

Thanks for your reply

Not partake yes, not attend no. You will still have to sit through bible study, prayer, Saturday church, etc. So like I said before, if your not a spiritual person then it might be too much. When I was there we had 2 guys do midnight runs because it just wasn't there thing.

They pay ontime no doubt. The college campus has an elementary, middle, and high school attatched to it. There are lots of foreigners living there. They also have a nice turf soccer field, basketball gym, bowling alley, and swimming pool. If you like to work out there is a gym too.

The school is located next to the Korean Olympic training campus. There is a great mountain to hike behind the school. The campus itself is huge and very nice.

Oh right. I was told that I wasn't expected to take the religious aspect in my job plus its not in my contact that I have to attend. Are the apartments big or standard size? Should I be wary of anything else. I was told that my own time was my own time so Saturdays are automatically ruled out for me with church. Its states in my contract the school closes then. Hope they don't do a you turn.

Looks like the recruiter isn't being totally honest. Like I said before my experience was 5 years ago so it might have changed. The children will attend a sort of kid's church at the school on Saturday so you might get one weekend a month off but be required to attend the rest of the time for a couple hours in the morning.

I think because you have Friday basically off the Saturday makes up the time difference. I could be wrong but Koreans are famous for not giving you whole story.

The apt are fine. The building is new so no problems. If your really worried about it I would get the words "NO SATURDAY WORK" put into the contract. If they won't do that then you know why. Cheers.

I know a friend working for SDA as just an english teacher and he does not do anything religious for them. He works Monday - Thursday and that's about it.

It's about 6-7 hours a day and Fridays off. Course not every SDA place is like that, and some DO work Monday - Friday. Some get dormitory style shared apartments and some get their own place. Depends where you are going to be placed. From what I hear from my friend, the support people are great and he really likes it. My friend is Christian but he does not partake OR attend in any extra religious things.

I arrived Saturday. Orientation starting tomorrow. It looks like a decent set up. I won't be hitting my main destination until next week when my training finishes. Will update then for you.
The school is Seoul is huge. If the set up here is anything to go by I'd say I'll be ok.
