Not a very good welcome Sad

The East coast looks much worse, with more snow to come today!

If you are in a heavy snow area, check your roof and clear it if you can!

I saw that. That's really terrible. Accidents like that are preventable with a bit of regular maintenance, which makes this story even sadder. Hopefully the injured will recover fully.

They're not only preventable with a bit of regular maintenance, but also with a bit of regulation, including, of course periodic unannounced inspections, and enforcement--actual enforcement--of those regulations. Training of those responsible for maintaining the building would go a long way to ensure safety. The second I heard about this collapse, my first questions were: "I wonder how many floors were added above the approved design?" and "I wonder how many inspectors were bribed and how much they got?"

Here is the story about the Sampoong Department Store collapse. Plenty of failures there.

Must have been a ton of snow to make it collapse like that.

It was a semi-temporary building, so probably not constructed to handle extra weight at all.

Nothing new here. There will be a rather short news cycle for a day or two, then photos of people bowing and crying.

Within a week all this will be forgotten. Koreans tend to quickly forget past self-imposed injuries.

Pretty much SOP here.

Laws/standards need enforcement.

Hopefully the families can sue the university and help ensure that tragedies like that never happen again. It was under the university's auspices that those young people went into that building. Sue the university and let the university in turn sue the building owner. Also, charges need to be brought against the building owner and whichever gov't inspector wasn't doing his job.

This was 100% avoidable. If it was my child under that rubble I would demand that heads roll.

This used to be a lot more common even a 10 years ago. Part of the problem is that universities used to pass everyone. Now it's hard to fail, but 10 years ago it was impossible. Even for engineers. So there are still a lot of incompetent people out there designing bridges and buildings.

It would have been ironic if the building had belonged to the architecture faculty.

That's a very interesting point. Passing incompetent philosophy majors won't kill anyone, but engineers - now that's scary. Never thought about that.

Apparently it was a temporary building "not intended to withstand heavy snow." Which begs the question of why it was being used after heavy snow, and why it was built in the first place in a resort in the mountains.

These are people's kids, and they are dead or injured for life because someone wanted to save some money or line their pockets.

Quote:
The school's officials acknowledged that the freshman party was held off campus because of disagreements between the school administration and the student council.

According to officials, the school offered to hold the one-day freshman orientation event on its new campus on Feb. 28, but the student council asked to hold it at an outside location.

The school granted the request but declined to provide financial support, officials said. The student council asked participating freshmen and other senior students to pay 60,000 won (US$56.60) each, according to one student who attended the party.

Why do people keep mentioning laws and regulations? Do any of you know the laws and regulations when it comes to Korean building codes?

Why is there an 'orientation' party in February? Doesn't the university school year begin in September? Do universities also accept new students after the winter break?
