I'm looking to teach in an elementary school in Seoul. Which is better and why?
1) Private elementary schools
2) International schools
3) Public elementary school (GEPIK, EPIK)
4) After-school program (located in an elementary school) |

Finding any public school job in Seoul is a tricky prospect. So if you can find any of the above willing to hire you, you should take it.
Depending on your visa status, experience, qualifications etc. Will also affect which are possible. |

Private elementary schools are having issues with the government now. They can be good jobs, but if it's an English immersion one, the program/ need for as many foreign teachers as they have now might change in future years.
International school pays better and has more vacation, but it's more work. It's also more stable, though.
Public will have a lot of deskwarming time, which could drive you crazy, and pay is low and vacations are not very good because of winter/summer camps. If you could get a job at any/all of the four of your choices, this would be the first I cut.
After school programs could go either way. They could be good or bad, and I'd talk to previous/other teachers before accepting. Do some of them still do the double bank book tax evasion thing? If you find a good one, you could get good pay for few hours a day of work, which is great. Bad ones could be terrible.
Now will probably be a bad time to look for any of them, not sure if you'll find on such short notice. All other than the international school are starting in two weeks and probably already have teachers lined up. The international schools are mid-year right now. |

1) Private elementary schools - Good if you have experience and get get a mom and pop gig with low hours
2) International schools - need a teaching degree and a few years experience
3) Public elementary school (GEPIK, EPIK) - take a pass on this unless you wanna work 40 hours a week for 2.1
4) After-school program (located in an elementary school)- pretty decent because you make as much as the public school teachers, while working 1/2 the time. Need an F or transferable E visa however |
