There is only a couple of weeks (or so) left before the semester starts so I think most applications have been completed and filled. However, there maybe some last minute emergency positions that come up. For example, I got my first university gig 5 days before the semester started.

If you are really keen and you have the right qualifications you can put on a suit and tie or dress and physically go to the language departments with resume etc. in hand and explain that you understand that positions have been filled but if for some reason something happens and you need someone immediately, that you are available.

This does happen where may be a new hire-e finds a better job at the last minute, someone may resign at the last minute or someone has to return to their own country at the last minute. It is not extremely common that such things happen but they do happen.

Also, keep looking on this websites job postings as this will be the place that last minute adds will show up.

And have any of you thought about the strange timing they have here? If you are teaching in a university, and you hope to move on to a better university, the jobs are not advertised until you would have already said yes or no to being renewed and signed a contract with your current university.

So, if the ask if you want to renew, and you are worried about not having a job at all, you will say yes I want to renew and sign a new contract. Or if they want you to renew, you can say no and HOPE you will find a new job.

It seems to me that you basically have two types of people in Korea who are teaching in a university applying to new job listings. One type is they say no, and pray they get something. The other type (most I bet) are able to apply to these jobs because their current university does not want them to stay for a new contract.

You are exactly right. This was the thing that happened to me last July/August. I told my employer (university) that I will not re-sign thinking hey I have the goods. But alas, in Korea it seems that mid-year hiring for the fall semester is drying up as there were very few jobs advertised. I got one interview but I obviously bombed (in a negative way) it as I wasn't offered the job.

So, I had to leave Korea during the fall semester and then return and start applying for spring semester intakes from November to January. I was fortunate that I will be starting at one of the most sought after university in Seoul in 1 weeks time.

But what I have learned is that timing is important. They university market is inundated with applicants who meet the required qualifications. Yes, it is a gamble to resign a current position without having secured another. But you also have to weigh up your options.

And of course there is a problem if that you tell them that you will re-sign but you eventually find a better position and before the semester starts you tell them "actually, I won't be coming back". They will take this very negatively, but if you explain that they have a pool of people that they initially rejected which they can call up straight away and offer them a job.
