|
|
The embassy wants me to file a 1040 through efile and send them a copy.
I tried to use efile but they ask for an EIN (employer identity number) and the number of my Korean school doesn't match.
How can I get this done?
I've read online that efile is impossible for ESL teachers in Korea. Is this true?
Thanks for any help you can give. |

I was under the impression that you couldn't e-file while working abroad under most circumstances, the reason being Form 2555-EZ wasn't one of the forms available for e-filing. |

I'm trying to get a visa for my wife and the embassy dude told me to efile and mail him a copy of my 1040 form. I I assume he told me that because it is possible but i don't know. I'm still trying to figure it out. Cheers. |

Got the info I need:
OK, if they didn't give you a W2 (or if you didn't fill out a W4 prior to working for them), they probably aren't withholding taxes on you, therefore you will have to report your income as 'other' income and pay income taxes on the money you earned.
You can't enter the earnings as W2 earnings when efiling your tax return if you didn't actually receive a W2. Instead, you will report the income as other income, and also take the appropriate tax deductions of they apply to you.
There isn't a database to search to see if they have an EIN Number, unfortunately, but based on what you told me, I highly doubt they have one anyway.
If you need a business Tax ID # so that you can count off your deductions, you can apply for one (an LLC might be a good option so you don't have to pay the employer and employee side of the taxes). Just choose your entity type here and fill out the application: federal-ein-numbers.com
Thanks, James |

wrong, enter income as a positive amount on line 7 "wages, salaries and tips" you don't need w2s to do this, then on the line for other income write in "form 2555" and enter it in as a negative number to zero it out, i've efiled for years and have done it this way with no problems |
