The food cart may be there illegally, but does that give the government (which ever level it came from) to have other citizens destroy other's property? Kind of doubt it. There are ways to do it, but that's not the right way, especially with almost everyone walking around with a video camera built into their cellphone.

Have you seen how people treat the police here? If they sent the police all the vendors would do is push the cops around and stay put. Short of sending in riot police this is probably the only way to get them to move.

But, I do hope street vendors stay around, legally that is. They're becoming increasingly harder to find in developed Asian countries, where they used to be everywhere a decade ago.

They could always use riot police with truncheons. The end result here is probably less and better. I hate to say it.

Damn OP, I was expecting some turf war fight with knife or bat wielding gangsters.

All you showed was an illegal food cart being tossed on the road. Worst gangster posting ever.

It may look ugly but sometimes they have to get rough. Odds are they ignored multiple warnings from the local government to close up shop. If they refuse to set up a legitimite business, and they take business away from those who play by the rules then it's a situation they created. You shouldn't have sympathy for them. The authorities side with the established store and restaurant owners but it is very difficult to keep those carts out of the area.

A few years ago they did the same thing in Ilsan in La festa and between La festa and Western Dom. It was a long-running battle between the restaurants and shops that pay taxes and meet the codes, and those who just decide to set up carts in front of the stores and restaurants. From time-to-time it happens in Myeong Dong, too.

Did they have an operating licence?

Did they have insurance?

Did they have a health inspection certificate?

I bet they didn't.

Does any of that warrant being assaulted and having your property destroyed?

Fine them, arrest them like any other civilized country would do. This is straight out of China or Russia's playbook.

You mean like how the US and Canada busted up "occupy" camps with police destroying things? or assaulting peaceful protesters on a fairly routine basis? Or how France sends in the cops to bust up Roma camps?
exactly which "civilized" country are you referring to?
Maybe it's this one:
http://www.alternet.org/activism/police-destroy-organic-farm-massive-swat-team-raid
or this one?
http://www.cannabisculture.com/blogs/2012/03/09/Why-Did-Vancouver-Police-Destroy-Private-Property
oh wait, I bet it was this one:
http://www.pennlive.com/midstate/index.ssf/2013/08/state_police_destroyed_her_hom.html

Feel free to let us know which country it is that where the police never destroy someone's property. You do something illegal over and over and over and keep putting your stuff somewhere illegally and the government is going to take it away from you.

I noticed that as well. And look at how many of them there were. With 5 guys, you should be able to tip over a car! The cart should have went over in seconds. Hell, with that many guys they could have just picked it up and walked away with it.

At one point I thought they were trying to put it on that flatbed truck, like maybe they were repossessing it, but then they just tipped it over in the street and left it there.

The one thing I learned in sociology was the state is the one part of society that has the right to use violence... or something like that.

Restaurants and shops battle street vendors in other countries. This is how they do it in China.

There were flatbed trucks, they failed to get them on there, gave up and pushed them into the streets.

Personally I would have preferred the police to come in and impound the illegal carts - and if there was any trouble, to arrest those who resisted. They are operating illegally and taking away business from legitimate places.

However, I fear that bringing the police into it directly would have made it even uglier. Anyone else recall the evictions of vendors across from IPark mall?

Sad

This is why citizens should have guns. These incidences always drag on and on. A gun or two and it would of all been over in an instant.

Korean citizens with guns would be a game changer. Not only would drunk Koreans get shot, we'd get shot too. The soju and drugs are getting more extreme where it's turning out to be the world's heaviest drinker. This newer soju with Chicago in red letters is higher grade quality of alcohol that you can party and go crazy with. Not like the soju of 4 years ago where the new stuff tastes much cleaner and gets you intoxicated like a vodka instead of just warming you up like the old soju did.

The richy people in Gangnam don't want the old style food carts, they the most top end real restaurants for steak, pizza, burgers, and foreign cuisines so they no longer want stinky traditional cheap food like deokbawkee, boendeggi, noodles on a skewer, and kimchi with little yellow radishes. They also don't want any 3rd world looking stuff in stinky streets reminding them of some impoverished past of war and aJapanese occupation. Gangnam got to go 1st world like London, Paris, and New York where the only food vendors will be authorized by the wealthy. Probably hot dog stands and non-Korean food varieties.

I watched til 12 minutes and ten of them still hadn't managed to knock it over.

And where was the gratuitous violence? You see worse trying to board a subway train every morning.
