Its looking bleak. Though lots of you post hate on other teachers the truth is most of us here are good enough at our jobs to do get another contract.

I came here in 2009 and the starting pay was 2.1, round trip, health and housing ($400). Maybe some jobs have pension. Nowadays I see 2.1, one way, health and housing or $400. How low an salaries go? I look at the Korean teachers and they make about 2.0 without housing, and I don't know about severance. Will our salaries rise with the Korean teachers if and when they finally do? How low will our salaries go over time as prices inflate?

Have you even looked at job boards lately?

Most are 2.5 or 2.7.

Hours are longer nowaday, but salaries have risen..

They may well drop more, once EPIK finishes.

This thread is bogus.

I'm seeing jobs with massive salaries such as 2.7

I'm seeing tons of PS positions available.

BTW GEPIK may be offering fewer positions but EPIK is recruiting away.

EPIK is reducing their numbers as well. No more middle and high school foreign teachers in most cases. Even EPIK elementary hiring is declining. When the teacher works at multiple schools (instead of one) they are covering more so less need to be hired. GEPIK payscale: 2.0-2.5 (which is less than what it used to be). EPIK: 1.8-2.7 (but it takes years to get to 2.7).

I get what people are saying about ESL being a dead end job and not really a career as your earnings aren't really going to go anywhere in 5 or 10 years time.

I left esl because it's a job that you get little respect for doing and your wages might not even increase with experience. Imagine an industry that experience means little and welcome to the scummy world of esl bosses. Move on to something with a future people, where you actually go up in wages year after year and gain respect. Once I noticed esl was going to get worse I made an effort to find a good job out of esl and when I look back I laugh at the industry. I made 4500 rmb teaching in Wuhan , China when I started 5 years ago. Now they pay 4000 and the prices on things have at least tripled since then.

Now is the time to be flexible and move into industries that are growing. My Chinese gf just scored a job for more than an esl teacher makes here in china and she is new to the city with few contacts. Why is she getting a better wage because she applied in the industries that are growing and have cash to throw around.

Esl wages are crap and have gone up little because they dont respect us and they can easlily replace us. Stay way from jobs that dont care about quality employees because they can basically hire anyone.

This is one of the wisest quotes I have ever read on Dave's. Ok the bar is pretty low. Laughing Those contemplating TEFLs, CELTAs or even Phds Rolling Eyes read this closely.

I've heard of TEFL jobs in countries like Spain and Italy paying 800 euros a month. Out of that you'd have to pay rent too so you're looking at having to share a flat. I don't think Korea'll ever go that low, unless it suddenly becomes one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world.

Don't they generally hire uni students taking time off though?

A few of my friends teach EFL in germany/spain and make pretty good coin teaching at adult academies and unis.

Yeah maybe. I was talking about entry level type jobs which people on here seem to be mostly comparing to other countries.

LOL sad is right. Some of these people have such a defeatist attitude and consider themselves on the lowest rung of employability. It's sad indeed.

World Traveler

I read some of your posts saying you were leaving TEFL and also leaving Dave's ESL cafe.

Could you please leave both and never return?

Thanks Wink
