I have been speaking with a lot of different recruiters about getting a job in August 2014. One in particular told me this:

"For EPIK, pls be aware they no longer let you pick specific cities. You only pick metro city or rural province. Also, you must decide to accept or decline a formal job offer, before you know which location you'll be placed."

Has anyone else heard anything about this? No other recruiter has said this when I request a city. I mean it's no big deal or anything, but I was just wondering if anyone has heard this.

For all practical purposes that was the way it was with me. If it's true I think it's great. Maybe the whiners will go work somewhere else.

It's a rich man's decision now and they seem to be able to call the shots for now. Eventually, it will change back.

Oh, okay. It does not bother me, but he said this right after I told him I wanted public school, and I thought maybe it was a tact to try and get me to choose a hagwon instead.

Yup. They started that a couple years ago...

The EPIK coordinator I dealt with told me it's first come first serve, but really, it's hard to know exactly what goes on behind the curtain.

If your preference is a specific MOE, and you're approved there, you've chosen your city. But there's still a chance you won't get that city and be bumped to a random location.

Be at the head of the line, but still recognize it's unlikely for you to be placed exactly where you'd like to be.
