This board is getting slow. In the job discussion forum, there was a total of only 16 messages (in all threads) posted with a date of March 1st. Even though Dave uses old technology, I like the layout here better than other message boards. It's more readable, and doesn't have stupid policies about posting.

No kidding.

The administrators did well to clamp down on much of the abusive posting on here that used to run riot years ago.

But they got too trigger-happy with pulling whole threads (usually the most interesting ones) instead of simply banning the one or two trolls.

What do you expect!

In the modern age, Dave's is inconvenient to use.

You have to register 4 times if you want to access different forums. It reduces discussion. Why register 4 times when can go to another site and register once. I personally use different sites to talk about China and Taiwan. And as their Korean section expands I talk more there.

Out of date threads are too many. Too strict moderation.

Agents on here I don't need to say much about and the expat agents are even worse than the in-country agents.

Plus with the job market and less jobs there are less people going to Korea. Ergo, expect less people using Dave's.

There is also selective moderation. You might go 2 years making comments, seeing others make similar comments, but then one day like an immigration officer one of them is having a bad day. Woman problems, bad drinking episode the previous night, sick, whatever, and your account can be banned for no reason other than you weren't conservative with your words.

Make a new account, wait, and then make the same comments and nothing happens for 2 more years. I don't mind being "moderated", being told to stop something, limited or restricted for a temporary period of time, but hitting someone over the head because you had a bad day is no way to solve or communicate a problem. That is essentially how they run things here. Perhaps, others are getting sick of it so they stop interacting here.

Communication is the key to resolving conflicts. That's why I continue to post mainly. I cannot control those who have more power than me. I also do not try to control others when I have more power than them. Lead by example.

I agree. There's clearly a core group of buddies and admins who are unbannable, but everyone else is fair game and the admins are ruthless at thinning the flock. So Dave's less a discussion board than a place people come when they are desperate.

Plus the industry is just slowing down in Korea. THere's less people in this game now.

It was a case of anarchy on here for years followed abruptly by something far too strict. One extreme to the other.

I agree they had to do something (much of the posting was a liability) but when you constantly zap the best threads for the crime of being amusing/ interesting then you're loosing the audience. Most people came on here to unwind/ vent/ have a laugh. It wasn't being taken that seriously.

And like all the others this thread is dying quickly.

2003 - 2005-ish were the best years on this board.

The pre-2003 board was also a lot of fun. A different era. A lot of interesting people were posting. Since then, Dave's has become sterile and boring. I check in out of habit, but it's just not the same. You need the trolls, and you need those with radical or opposing opinions or views from the majority to keep a forum interesting. Dave's no longer has that, not on the main forums or the Korean forums.

Also, forums aren't as popular as they were 15 years ago when they were first introduced. Now it's Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and other social media. The glory days of lively, interesting forums have passed for most boards.

Dave's is now outdated. The fact that people have to set up 2 different accounts, or more, for the main forums, the Korean forums and the teaching forums is ridiculous.

Has anyone ever understood the reason for having a separate forum for Korea? Why isn't it on the main forum with China, Japan, etc., in the Asian forums? This just confused a lot of people over the years on the main forums who posted there asking questions about Korea, but were then told to sign up for a separate account here on the Korean forums.

No one is harder on foreigners in Korea than fellow foreigners.

I still love the lack of up/downvoting on boards of this type. And the ability to resurrect any thread you want with a simple reply.

I said something similar to what you just said and I got banned from the international forums on here...so yeah, since I had posted a ton of stuff to contribute to the forums and someone was having a bad day - no warning or anything just good bye. Email to dave unanswered either, I figure they won't get my time and expertise on the other forum.

This forum's moderators are pretty good. If you had been here in the early days, they were working like crazy to deal with bad posters and trolls 24/7. While these things still show up, it isn't even close to back in 2003-2004...

I would rather see less posts on here but with more mature tones and commentary.

Also with the search feature, by this time, most things have been asked/answered so why repost the same question over and over?

Well, there are a few options. You allow regulars to moderate specific forums. One regular would focus on contracts, another on new questions.

Limit which forums new accounts can post in. After a specific number of posts or time, then they could be allowed.

You reply to 10 posts then you can start a new one. An admin would have allow this and could screen it the first time. After that, you are allowed to post pictures after 20 posts. Or make it time framed, after 1 week, then 1 month, etc...

Reward people who help out and behave well. If all you do is ban out of spite or a bad day it doesn't make friends.

There is simply no community spirit here. It is a bunch of malcontents sniping at each other. Good advice can simply be gotten elsewhere.

I'm not surprised. The main forum is really, and always has been, different than this forum for moderation.

The main forums has seen some great posters who were banned, never to return. Some whom I know say that they just can't be bothered to mess with Dave's anymore.

Dave doesn't answer e-mails? Does he even have any involvement with the site anymore? Why hasn't he upgraded the forums?

There's a lot of questions to things here that never get answered but would be nice to know.
