As with anyone working for a commission, recruiters will tell you everything you want to hear and little else.

I have a funny feeling he is stuck in a renewable contract, in which he cant get out of unless he finds the replacement. The contract it self states that the employee has to do this. .

No such thing. You can quit or finish at any time. The contract requires your agreement to renew. It's not automatic.

True but bosses sometimes threaten to withhold pay if you don't find a replacement. It's totally illegal and no court would accept this behavior, even if it's written into the contract. BUT some teachers just want to grab their last paycheck and get out, so they'll throw the next guy under the bus. A few might even be promised a little bonus for finding a replacement (recruiters aren't cheap). Recruiters make AT LEAST 1 million (and up to 2 million in some cases) but 1.5 is common. If you offered most teachers an extra 300,000 Won to find a replacement, most would happily take it and have no regrets about what they had to tell the next teacher in order to get that money.
