It is truly astonishing how bad some Korean English teachers are at speaking English. Some politicians even want to phase out foreigners teaching English in the classroom. When this happens, hilarity will ensue in very short time.

Check out this genius.Very Happy

Apart from the obvious hilarity, that lesson was bizarre it looked like something from 40 years ago. Does anyone teach like that nowadays? At times it wasn't clear what language she was teaching, for example when she translated something into Korean then got them to repeat the Korean twice. WTF?

Don't you watch the TV? You get to see this type of teaching on education channels all the time. And sorry to say, I once gave a 4th year trainee teacher an hour to one of my 5th grades and she did something similar. Trainee teachers do know what they want to do, but under pressure they go back to the old familiar. Laughing

This video is like 2-3 years old :p

The really terrible thing is that most Korean English teachers actually speak far less English in the classroom than she did in the video Shocked

CLT at it's finest.

I know we have a big problem in my program because we support schools that we went teacher trainees to and more often than not the trainees come back only to report that the teachers they were watching used traditional teaching methods exclusively. This is after promising / swearing / emphasizing that they use CLT in their lessons in the interview process. They even have to provide videos of themselves using CLT in the classroom and then dont use it later (practised lessons wheeee)

She was. Because I watched a few of her videos before becoming very disinterested, very quickly, at her teaching method.
She taught me how to not teach!

Was she? I just assumed she was teaching English as she seemed to be repeating the English expressions more often than the Korean ones. If she was teaching Korean, that makes her even worse

He's correct. She teaches Korean to foreigners. Her "classes" are called Christine's FUN FUN Korean Conversation. She has a ton of videos....I tried listening to some but her voice is so awful I had stop.

I don't get it she's doing it again. Drilling the English expressions. Strange. Also I like the way she's teaching foreigners - AKA Americans - so she teaches them how to order hamburger and pizza. Rolling Eyes Maybe I should be teaching my students how to order dog when they get to the UK.

I've seen similar in my last three years at public schools.

If anything it's getting worse.

I feel really bad for that girl in the video. It's quite juvenile making a big deal about the word coke being pronounced like cock, I hope she didn't see the video

I yearn for the "good old days," say before 2008, when it was possible to get a public school job anywhere in Korea. Under President Lee Myung Bak, after 2007, the visa application process got much harder, so it was possible to miss deadlines and lose jobs-although he wanted to greatlly expand English education.
Now, Park Geun hye seems totally uninterested in English. She just happens to speak English well, so she doesn't need to study it. Korea is one country where English teaching, especially in public schools has gone through huge changes over the past 10 years. And the government might be phasing it out now. BUT suddenly someone important might come up and say-
oops! Er-I think we really should be investing in ESL! We've fallen behind all these other countries." I don't know for sure if that will happen, but it's possible in a country where people keep changing their mind about what EFL is for and are never satisfied.

I do too, you can tell she's not interested in cocks, just cokes. I really hope she hasn't been privy to what people have been saying about her skills.
