|
|
People have sent me information about jobs in English Villages. What are they like? What is it like to work there? What are the pay and conditions like compared to regular hagwons? Are they okay, or are they terrible. Dish the dirt if there is any. What is it like to live in an English Village outside of school hours.
Are these jobs harder to get than standard hagwon jobs?
I have an ARC until mid-May. Is it possible to carry my visa over to the new contract with the English Village, or do I have to go back and chase up all these apostilles again? |

There IS some variation among English Villages, so it's hard to say what they're ALL like, however...
Generally:
-some of the easiest jobs to do in Korea (you're basically a camp counsellor). SERIOUSLY EASY.
-standard entry salary 2.0/2.1
-often among the longest expected working hours in Korea, almost certainly among the longest student contact hours
-usually dormitory housing (the only village I knew of that offered off-campus housing changed their policy recently)
-if city/provincially funded, likely a better/more stable work situation than fully private ones (maybe those have all shuttered by now?)
-not centrally located
-large number of teachers, less culture shock, insta-social network (if that's a concern)
-hire year-round
-given the working hours and housing situation is common knowledge, the bar for their hiring tends to be lower than most jobs
The prevailing sentiment seems to be "Stay the hell away from English Villages", but basically it's the same as hagwons. Research the individual institution as much as you can. Try to talk to a current or recent teacher.
If your only preference is you want to coast to every paycheck, an English Village could be great for you. Otherwise...research.
*Edit: A lot of Villages have enough staff to warrant a Facebook group. You can try searching the Village name there and messaging a few teachers to make your inquiries. |
