After over a decade of going to gyms, both in this country and others, I reached a point where I hated going to the gym- there really is something to hate at every single one of them. For some reason those things never bothered me much until late last year, but when they started to annoy me, they really got on my nerves.
Anyway, I ended up buying enough equipment to work out at home. I have:
- a Concept 2 rower
- a foam roller
- a skipping rope
- gymnastic rings (for pullups and dips)
- a dip belt and some weights
- an ab wheel
There's also a track near my school for running, and with all of that, I don't feel like I need anything else (I don't need any equipment for things like pistol squats, burpees, handstand pushups, and so on).
Anyone else doing the same? Any relatively inexpensive equipment that I might be overlooking? |

I play street hockey. All you need is a stick, a ball and start running. No membership required, but you have to watch out for cars. |

I have some free weights, and a mat. I used to go to the gym and spend tonnes of time running and using machines that isolate muscles. For the last 3 years I've worked out at home, no more than 30 minutes a day (and often only 20). I've never been in better shape.
burpees
pushups
crunches
plank
HIIT
freeweights used for combination moves (legs and arms at the same time) |

I was a competitive bodybuilder and trainer for many years, so I'm a bit of a fitness nut, but there aren't any gyms in the area in which my wife and I currently live (and while a good gym usually factors into my choice of residence, it wasn't an option in this case). I have the following:
3 extra thick yoga mats for stretching/core work
Door frame pullup bar (hooks into a bracket installed in the wall)
Medium Swiss ball (for seated weight training and core work)
Dynadisc (balance work and core work)
1 set small Powerblocks (incredible adjustable dumbbells, but pricey)
1 set large Powerblocks (small goes to 25 lbs each, large goes to 50)
1 magnetic resistance recumbent bike
We shelled out a pretty large chunk of change for this stuff, but it's really demotivating to try and exercise with crappy equipment, and now a few years later, it's turned out to be cheaper than memberships for the two of us (50-60,000/month x 2 people for a nicer gym). I highly recommend spending 300-500,000 for a good magnetic resistance recumbent, as you can set it up next to your sofa and get in an easy 1-2 hours each day while you're watching TV or movies.
That Concept 2 is beauty. Well chosen. I always recommend to people to invest in good equipment IF they're sincere about putting in the time on a consistent basis. I'd recommend getting a Swiss ball or dynadisc (I think they sell them as balance trainers here) for proprioception and core work, as it can really help add a challenging dimension to your weight training. Simply destabilizing an exercise puts immense on strain on your smaller, surrounding musculature, which can help you stay injury free if you're training with slightly lighter weights.

I don't think I could achieve what I want in a home gym... at least a home gym my wife would let me set up. lol
All the power to ya though, OP. At least the weather will never be an excuse |

You'd have to have a spare room. But, it would be convenient and weather wouldn't be a deterent nor would crappy gyms that have old equipment or don't turn on their air con in summer. |
