I cannot believe people still remember me and mention me in 2013 ! I have not checked this site in years and on this lame nostalgic night I remember an old alias, search up my previous one and voila.... it's nice to be remembered, for whatever reason! |

For anyone reading this that is interested, just go back to 2003 - 2005 and see who was posting. A lot of radicals mixed in with some genuinely nice people and short-term newbs.
Yeah, it would be nice to post some photo of 2003 and 2014 - then and now. |

I have a question for those who lived here in the 2003-2004 era. I arrived in 2007. Were there that many changes even a few years later? I saw lots of changes even in 2010. |

The changes in some things from the IMF (1998) era to the World Cup (2002) era were big. The changes really haven't slowed down too much. Its almost like 2 different worlds from then to now.

I know you posted this a bit ago, but what sorts of changes were you seeking to hear about? Superficial stuff like Itaewon and other common congregation points for foreigners, or availability of Western food, or something deeper like changes in attitudes about various issues among Koreans? Or do you mean literal changes, like line 6 not existing in 2001. |

Holy Hell! No line 6 in 2001? How did the masses get to Itaewon back then? |

rickshaw, uphill both ways, in six feet of snow and yellow dust
Personally, I would come in from out of town, so saw a lot of taxi time due to that. I'd reckon everyone just did that? |

Hmmm...rickshaw uphill both ways sounds plausible. The six feet of snow is clearly an exaggeration (or is it?). Damn China and their Gobi Desert blowing yellow dust out of the country.
I never thought about taking a taxi there. Must have set up those special foreigner ones for the '88 games. |

Zyzyfer, I guess just any major change in living experience, from a foreigner's perspective. Any perception of something different between those times. |

Hmm. It's kind of directionless and honestly there have been similar threads, but...
- Koreans started to become far more interested in foreign goods, in particular, wine, so they started to show up more on the mainstream market
- the opportunity to teach English in public schools came into full swing
- the Korean Wave turned into a thing (as in, beyond that Yon-sama dork)
- I guess things like the bus lanes being introduced, which made taking the bus a sane proposition, and the initiative to get people to walk on the right rather than the left, came about
- foreigner visa requirements remained relatively open between 03-07 as compared to the 07-10 period, where shit hit the fan
- this might just be language deficiency, but I could have sworn that the 우리 concept really blew up around this time (우리나라, 우리땅, etc.)
- K-pop started to embrace the "inherent sexiness" of 12-year-old girls
- I stopped being a "Korean apologist" and drifted more toward the center
- anti-Americanism among Koreans became a hot issue thanks to Noh Moo-hyun pricking about
- Itaewon showed the very earliest signs of the beginning of its transition into trendy hot spot (closer to the 2007 end, really)
Apologies for the randomness, I just wrote crap down as it came to mind, as I've never really put much thought into the changes that occurred during that particular period. |

I think my question is a bit difficult considering such a narrow window of time, but your recollection is informative, especially since every thing you said seems exactly as things had been when I got here. |
