Seems like Canadians aren't as well liked as they think they are.
http://news.nationalpost.com/2014/03/07/im-canadian-f-you-how-boorish-utterly-wasted-tourists-are-rewriting-the-treasured-myth-of-the-nice-canuck/

"He has spent much of his professional career steeped in Canadian studies, and after four decades “I see no sign that Canadians are thought of as quiet or nice.”

"Tensions are not quite so fever-pitched in New England, although Canadians—and particularly French Canadians—have developed a nasty reputation for stingy tips. In Burlington, Vermont, fed-up restaurants have begun emblazoning their menus with the message “tipping is not just something you do in a canoe” or even tacking on Canadian-specific surcharge."

"Inevitably, online reviews of Mexican and Caribbean resorts have begun complaining of the rash of “drunken Canadians,” “disrespectful Canadians” and “utterly wasted Canadians.”"

"The Prime Minister needn’t have worried. As per a 2003 survey by the University of Chicago’s National Opinion Research Center, more Canadians were convinced of the superiority of their nation than almost any other citizenry on earth."

Nice FOX News worthy article. What's your point, aside from starting a hateful thread of course?

You caught one already, nice snag. I'll roll with this even though it's going to be deleted by the Canadian mod squad. Honestly, I don't know where that country gets its ego from, they've never really done anything and nobody even thinks about that frigid tundra nation. What it said about tipping is gold to me since I ALWAYS hear groups of them arguing over how much to put in when paying the check, and don't have to wonder anymore why I get thanked profusely for my 10-20% or even anything extra at all. Gotta save those loonies! I was also getting a sandwich to go the other night and this group of two couples kept telling the waiter how horrible AmericaNS were, how he should never go there, and then, oh, yes, how Canada was better because they won that hockey game! It's a script, like koreans do, that's why they fit in so well. I was sitting there waiting for my goddamn BLT and resisting the urge to walk up and rub one of those moose stuffers' fettuccine alfredo in their face, but they were like 60. I still feel ashamed because I had every opportunity to say something and there was no one else in there except for this poor waiter listening to their cretin propaganda, but I didn't. I used to really like Canadians and spent months traveling with a few of them in Europe and Africa back in the day. But, now... eh, I refrain from communicating with them as much as possible unless they've been proven to be more intellectual than the average person from our Northern Mississippi region. On to my objective spin, I don't think they're disrespectful people who walk around drunk causing problems, or more than anyone else, and I think they're generally pretty nice and easy going. Just... simple in the mind.

Augustine,

You live in Korea long term as a westerner. Canadians that do so (not all but most) tend to be losers of the losers. Scraping the bottom of the barrel if you will. The same could be said of other nationalities living in Korea more than overstaying their welcome (i'm not excluding guys married to locals either..very few upstanding individuals there). But I guess you are one of the ole exceptions yes?

Point is, you met so many dick Canadians because of where you chose to live out your years as an american. Wanna meet decent Canadians? Meet them in Canada or like you say backpacking. Heck, my Korean experience made me despise Canadians but the others from English speaking countries were generally cut from the same cloth so I despised them too. You want to meet an avg person from X English speaking country?

Korea won't exactly have the cream of the crop.

I was talking about mexico and the Canadians here. I don't live in Korea anymore and have no plans to return. I wasn't very close to many Canadians in the two years I lived in itaewon, but the ones I did know I never recall having much of a problem with if any. This group I'm talking about are well off tourists living or vacationing in mexico, and by all means they shouldn't be classified as losers. Or should they as well?

I bet you're real fun to hang out with at parties.

I have to say that in general, I Love the foreign teachers here in Korea even Canadians. There must be something wrong with me right?. I find them much more cultured than most people I meet in the west. I will miss them a lot when I leave.

Honestly, it takes some arrogance to label tens of thousands of people you've never met as 'losers'. I've met plenty of upstanding, intelligent Westerners here over the years. And I've met a few idiots. All are university graduates, many have Korean wives and children and have significant savings. Some put on plays, others volunteer at animal shelters, others are writing books, some have excellent jobs, and others simply enjoy living in Asia. Every one of them is an individual and is here for a reason that you know nothing about. To make such a sweeping condemnation of foreigners in Korea is not the mark of an intelligent and insightful person. Maybe it's the places you hang out, but where I hang out the foreigners in no way match your hateful depiction.

Foreigners who knock other foreigners down more often than not have self-esteem issues. Others are just jerks. Which one are you?

While most of the article was pretty crappy news, this always makes me curious:

Quote:
Just in case the locals mistook them for Americans, Brits or Australians, the small group was “covered in maple leafs.”

It is, I would wager, true for 90% or more Canadians.

What is up with that?

I know the history of that one, first hand. It started in the 1960s when North Americans started backpacking around Europe, clutching their copies of "Europe on $5 a Day." Word had it that a Canuck flag on your bag earned nicer treatment from the locals & a few Americans even sewed one on. That lore seems to still resonate with quite a few Canadians.

Embarrassing to me personally. Never have, never would make a show of it myself. But I'm not my brother's keeper.

Good to know. I had always just assumed it was because most of the Canadians I know are overboard with the nationalistic stuff.

Seems like I hit a nerve there. You seem quick to defend Korea like its a bastion of western expat intelligentsia. If that is what you think based on your experience, the more power to ya.

Just relaying my experience. Yeah I knew a few upstanding individuals too. Unfortunately that couldn't be said about the majority. It's funny because the Koreans I got to know basically had the same opinion. Ie. Not all westerners in Korea are bad, but most don't respect the culture and are quick to criticize it. They stay and get entitled, think Korea owes them something and when teaching wages drop they flip out even though they were hired on the basis of their skin colour and the language they grew up with. They are the ones that should go. Anyway, my friends' words not mine. After my experience there I was inclined to agree.

Yeah I guess they are. We just had different experiences. I never really thought Canadians could be so irritating to be around until I lived in South Korea.

These topics are so strange for me. I never really encounter these types of people.

I train on base quite often, and once in a while someone will do a doublet take and ask if I'm Canadian (from hearing me speak, I'd presume), and then ... that's it. My American buds and I joke about beavers invading the US and such, but it never gets serious.

So who the heck do you guys hang around that goes like this?

I've met a couple idiot fellow countrymen who are all "Rah rah hockeymolseneh?", but I don't think it's anywhere near as prevalent as the OP suggests. Just a vocal minority making the rest of us look bad. Much like the American bible belt, only far fewer.
