In fact they are. Driver's are like punters in gridiron. You'd think anybody could kick, right? Wrong. Punters are people with very precise body control, like fighter pilots or samurai swordsmen or decathletes or ballet dancers. You need strength in different and usually not noticeable places to fight the 4-g forces doing the corners. |
Yeah, I always find it amusing when top athletes are thrown in race cars or jet fighters and end up puking and blacking out. That whole "race car drivers aren't athletes" noise gets thrown out.
Anyways, its nice to see me and SenorNegroGato on the same side of an issue for once. |
There are plenty of people playing sports who aren't athletes. There just isn't another name/category for it as there should be, like 'skilled competitors' or something. I don't have the physical dexterity to be a pro dart player, but I'm not calling them athletes. rugby, hockey, football, tennis, etc. these are athletic sports. Drivers, curlers, golfers are not athletes in my opinion. Poker appears on ESPN, but they aren't athletes. There are hugely talented people, but not athletes, but until there is a proper name given to highly skilled competitors, we'll still have 60yr old pro athletes. |
