| Talk about presents. I came in to work today and found out that my coteacher purchases me at least 75$ worth of groceries. Has this ever happened to anybody else? I would never do this especially to a stranger that I just met a couple weeks ago. |

Exactly. There's no such thing as a free lunch, especially here in Korea. That box of cereal has more strings attached to it that pinocchio. You now owe them, and they've already decided how it will be repaid. If you don't play the game they will find ways to retrieve that $75 worth of groceries from your paycheck - then sack you in the eleventh month. Welcome to Korea, and enjoy that little welcoming package.

LOL Nicely phrased, but I don't it will be necessarily compromising. I predict the OP will be receiving either a 100 page MA thesis, a speech or an extensive and tedious application to an overseas university to proof-read very soon. |

Hey, at least they got the payment in advance!
I once proofread a paper for a senior coworker here in a different department, under the promise that he'd buy me lunch, but after it was done he told me he couldn't fulfill his "promise" to me.
That was fine as I'd almost have paid NOT to have lunch with the guy, but still, shady move on his part.
A good thing about many Koreans is that they almost always pay you back somehow if you do something for them. |

I met one at orientation, way back when, who was telling everyone, like she was proud of it, that she had been offered money to do porn by someone on the street in Seoul. Also a Korean man who worked in her school's financial office wanted to take her away for a vacation, all expenses paid. |

I hope she informed the person making the request that such employment would be illegal not only for her because of her visa status, but also because making, distributing, and viewing pornography is illegal in the Republic of Korea.
It is most odd that this person, while presumably Korean, didn't know that Korea is a conservative country. |
