It's true that attractive people have a leg up in the hiring process. I would say that has always been the case. But do the ideas that we sell so persuasively have any merit? Now I can understand the draw when it comes to sales type jobs, but when it concerns others that involve a specific knowledge where learning fast is extremely important, then I doubt its effectiveness. The hiring process is only the beginning. Companies are about the bottom line inevitably. And their initial failure to see beyond the external does come to haunt them down the line sometimes. |
I told my students if you want to rise above looks discrimination and being too old, etc to get a real degree. Be an engineer, an accountant, a scientist, an IT person, etc. Unlike a Samsung office worker, you don't get booted out of your job at age 45. If I had to go back home, I'd upgrade and train for one of these positions, then work for as long as I please. Easier said than done of course. But, you're never too old if you have the skills highly demanded in the market place. |
