I am perfectly comfortable saying that "Koreans" spit on the street, eat their food loudly, and drive their cars wrecklessly. They do, and no amount of PC sugar-coating will convince me that it's unreasonable to say so. . |

More utter BS from SR. You rarely use "some." You habitually make over-generalizations. You post your opinions as facts. You over-exaggerate. You resort to hyperbole and bombast. You twist and spin the words of other posters.
And you lie.
Josef Goebbels ain't got nothing on you.
So please take the hypocrisy of your last post and shove it. |
Et tu Brute? You just compared me to Josef Goebbels. |
And I stand by that comparison, even though it is a bit unfair to Goebbels, who worked on a much, much larger canvas than you.
And while your Geobbels-like attempts to control the discussions here are merely a nuisance, who knows what nonsense you're trying to put into the heads of those grade schoolers you "teach."
Thankfully, they've surely drifted off into sleep or some other form of unconsciousness by the time you've hit your stride. Maybe that's why you've resorted to yelling in many of your latest posts. |

Steelrails dude, can you please select a different Avatar. That one is just annoying as hell - and you don't need any help in that area. We all know you have issues with black men ("riding four deep" and all that) but can you move on to the next avatar. You've had about one a month recently; keep the momemntum going and move things along.
Cheers in advance. |

I think the aim is actually to prevent you from thinking it. |

I stand by Scorpion on this, with a few exceptions. I would have never married my wife if she did any of these things. Thank heavens.
I'm sure it's difficult for Koreans (raised abroad or not) to accept reading a website where non-Koreans bash about these traits, but he's right, no amount of sugar coating will change the overwhelming majority. Maybe one day in the next few generations, things will be different. Then we can say that these are things of the past, and lament on our 'glory days' in Korea. |

Just because you think Steelrails sometimes fails to use a modifier doesn't make not using a modifier right. Right is still right. Using a modifier is the real common sense not understanding that it should be used.
While I think the OP had the best intentions, I tend to agree with the person who thought he was drunk, using a modifier such as many and some, doesn't make statements like "peasants in suits" any less, well, condescending and arrogant at best, possibly racist at worst.
Working overseas has more than its share of challenges. Dealing with culture shock - the realization that people (of another culture) think and act differently than you is one of them.
I suspect there is a lot more people suffering from culture shock than will admit it. Though, when you read articles like the one about the President of Pagoda, it is not too surprising that a lot of people develop negative views of Koreans, as many people are abused in their jobs, especially hakwon jobs. But, as always, we should see everyone as individuals, not as whole groups. You would not want Koreans to stereotype all people from your home country based on the bad behavior of some or even many of your fellow compatriots. |
The fundamental wrong aspect of being a hakwon teacher is that you are a contract worker. all contract workers in Korea deal with fear and the very real chance they will get fired and the boss knows your time is coming up.
The best is to be a full time worker, otherwise known as jung gyu jik. 정규직.
Basically its like tenure, think Japan and lifetime employment. Well until your mid 40s. This situation is much much more comfortable and less stressful than being a neglected abused contract worker. The abuse happens to Koreans on contract too. Ive seen it happen to ivy league Koreans SKY Koreans who are on contract. Their boss knows its just a matter of time until the contract is up, and uses this against you for negotiations or expulsion. |

I think its normal for contract workers in korea to want to complain and hate their situation. Most of the time it has much less leverage than being a full time worker, which is almost like tenure. Its just wrong to exploit people this way, but i have seen many koreans exploited via contract positions. Also people from the west are used to being fired at a moments notice. So i always imagined it would not be that shocking... But im sure the stress is similar to what koreans on contract go thru |

Well, I have been contemplating a move to 'The Shockmaster'...

Really? I thought it might be the crowd fighting tooth and nail about how the white man is getting shafted back home.
Oh and, its clear you have an issue with black men, as you are bringing that up and thinking about that.
I'm from SE Michigan. I grew up a Pistons fan, and Rasheed Wallace is one of the greatest Pistons ever. That's all I see. You apparently see something else.
Avatar don't lie.

Dude, atwood. You can't accuse someone on an internet board of hyperbole and then compare them to Josef Goebbels. Sorry, but you failed.

...well, I guess the avatar stays. Roscoe forever. Ball don't lie. As a fellow Pistons fan, you know what a thing of beauty that gif is.

But is it really the overwhelming majority? In some cases, quite possibly, in other cases, its not. And in some of those things you list, do other ethnicities, including our own, do those as well? I mean, you walk into a Denny's at 3AM back home (or even a McD's at 6 in the evening), you aren't going to be greeted by silence and a bunch of people following Emily Post's rules of etiquette. |

Can't it just be assumed that usually Koreans means the majority of Koreans and not literally all of them? I'd consider it pretty pedantic if one person claimed 'Koreans eat rice and kimchi for breakfast' then another poster chimed in with 'Not all Koreans do that'. It goes without saying. |

That's Your Dudeness to you, blind rabbit.
And sure I can. In fact, I just did and will do so again, right now. That you don't deny your use of hyperbole but instead want to accuse me is a Goebbels-type tactic.
And how about those false analogies? You've got this propaganda schtick down. |

How about El Duderino? I'm into the whole brevity thing. Can't you tell by my posts?
Anyways, dude. Goebbels dude. I hope for your sake you're not wholly serious and just trolling me. If you actually in all seriousness put me on the level of Goebbels, that's just pathetic and you need to see a shrink.

But often times what's being claimed isn't always the majority, sometimes its just a sizable minority. Sometimes, its not even accurate. Take for example your statement about "rice and kimchi", the way it is worded makes it sound like kimchi is a staple of the meal, when in reality its usually a side item, the way a banana would be. And what would our reaction be to "Westerners eat cereal for breakfast". Would we not instantly pick apart a bunch of things wrong with that statement? Wouldn't we not think it vital to include the clause of "some". Do we assume that Koreans don't mean ALL Westerners everyday?
I just find it odd that some bashers and even balanced posters, who also complain about stereotypes and generalizations about foreigners, are either frustrated by having to add "some" or have reluctantly come around to it. |

That requires people being reasonable, but you can't expect people to be reasonable when they're busy trying to show how "tolerant" they are for the sake of proving their "I'm Not Racist" credentials. |
