Is South Korea really that superficial/materialistic?

I guess when it comes down it most people all over the world live pretty superficial lives without much meaning, not that's exactly easy to do otherwise being caught up in making a living and other immediate concerns that seem to take up most of our time.

A honeymoon in Hawaii is considered better than a honeymoon in Bali because "imagee".

The extent of the materialism in Korea is way beyond the purses and the plastic surgery.

I'd consider it better too because there's more to do. Rent a car and drive around the big Island. Just not during the 6 months where the winds blow the wrong way (or so I'm told). It's way more expensive. But, instead of spending 10 million at one of those gay wedding halls, have a reception in a nice public park for free. Your wedding certificate means you're married once you receive it, not when the pastor or announcer says you are. Spend one or two million catering some food, getting some flowers, and having a nice photographer. Then, all the money you saved on not having a rip off wedding. Take a nice two or three week vacation in Hawaii, rent a car and travel around. But, common sense is often best left at Incheon Airport to be picked up on your way back out.

Anyways, to add to what I said before, I lvied in a small town several years ago and the folks had very old traditional attitudes. Well, anyone over 35 or 40 at that time did. Maybe 45 or 50 now (or soon)? Well, they were obsessed with status, title, position, and appearance of wealth. Many would live in a smaller apartment and buy a Chairman rather than just drive a Sonata and live in a bigger apartment or house. (Guess that's western thinking.) A lot of folks personal self esteem seemed to be having more things and being better than other people. (Put others down to make yourself feel better.) It's probably part of the reason English teachers use to be looked down on. Didn't help that many of us had long beards, were quite overweight, dressed like bums, and would never spend the money to stay in a nice place when travelling. Ha ha.

I don't see the attitude in younger generations and it seems less prevalent amongst many middle aged Koreans I meet nowadays. Perhaps, the depressed world economy has brought some humility or folks just don't care anymore. I do see the status thing a little bit in very old people ready to retire in the next few years.

What's this use to be nonsense? English teachers are still looked down on. If anything our status in Korea use to be some what decent, and has declined over the years to the low point it's at now.

Large bolds asides, what I remember, the Korean media, in the last decade, use to run constant fluff pieces about us. I also noticed more coldness and xenophobia from folks in general. The past two to three years, I've noticed folks being much friendlier towards me personally. There are much less negative lies written about us in the newspapers. The global downturn has had a humbling effect maybe? Just my guess, along with more folks going abroad. I just don't see as many bragging about their status like before. Much older folks maybe.
