Quote:
Police sought arrest warrants Thursday for six men in connection with the collapse of a poorly built resort facility that killed 10 university students.

The snow-covered roof of the gymnasium facility at the Mauna Ocean Resort in the historical tourist city of Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang Province, caved in on Feb. 17 during a freshmen welcoming party. The incident also injured 204 others.

Announcing the final result of an investigation into the case, a special police investigation team said arrest warrants have been sought for two executives of the gymnasium operator and four other men involved in the building of the gymnasium on manslaughter charges.

An additional 16 people will be booked without physical detention on charges of negligence and forgery of official documents. (Yonhap)

Thats good news. I would be pleased to see someone get some jail time for that.

At a university orientation event. Parents just sent their kids off to school...*sigh* That really was incredibly heartbreaking.

Apropos of building negligence, I link-hopped my way into this a while back, I think from a news story about the gym collapse actually. A fascinating saga, with the consequences (or relative lack thereof?) for those responsible being of particular interest.

It will happen again, because it's the failure of the government to inspect these buildings that allows this to happen.

"Things weren't build according to government rules." Reminds me of that scene in Casablanca, "I'm shocked to learn there's gambling going on here."

I hate to say it but the charges may be more about assigning blame so the civil suits can take money from them. They may see some jail time but the civil suits will be the main punishment.

I think youre probably right.

However, the new trend of civil suits may at least encourage people to take more responsibility for their actions (or un action in some cases). Even if it means they sort out their act only to avoid being sued, its a start.

They've got an Olympics coming up and they had some pretty bad press recently with that bridge collapsing in Busan. They need to get their crap together.
