I was just watching a video about homeless Westerners in Thailand:

I was wondering if you have seen any homeless Westerners in Korea? I do remember one Western guy living on the street in Itaewan years ago.

They would prefer to be homeless there instead of home. From the video, they seem to be like "Hey, this ain't bad."

In Thailand, how much do privates pay; how easy would they be to get? To help those homeless Westerners, someone should put them in contact with students.

Many homeless people have issues with mental illness.

Get them some students? These are people who are either mentally ill or don't have the ability to do what it takes to not be homeless. They have no business teaching anyone anything.

The woman doing the voice over sounds like Stephen Hawking's sister.

You can take your family to San Francisco or Seattle and let the homeless people teach your kids if you want.

As the world's first true lingua franca, English is the most useful and important language in the history of civilization. Non native speakers around the world are desperate to learn it. They need it. The homeless Westerners in Thailand aren't necessarily bad or dangerous people. Teaching English would not only help them get back on their feet, but would be doing a great service to others. I heard a while back privates in Thailand were paying at least $20 an hour (but I'm not sure now of the exact going rate, which is why I ask). If I knew of a connection, I would try to help those guys out. English = power and options (for both the native speakers and the learners of the language).

Outside of Bangkok "privates" usually pay about 200-300 baht per hour ($6-$10). There are actually very few places where you would get $20/hr (even in Bangkok) and the unwashed-homeless aren't in that $20 category.

If you are a native speaker and sober enough to take a shower and put on a clean shirt and shoes it isn't hard to find basic work (even for the uneducated riff-raff).

Homeless Caucasians in Thailand are homeless for a reason, usually illegally in the country and not people I would want within a mile of one of my schools (the kids and their safety are my first priority).

Are you talking about Westerners teaching for that kind of money? I'm shocked.

I'm shocked, too. And my bad, ttompatz. I was getting information from places like this:
http://www.ajarn.com/ajarn-street/articles/how-can-you-find-private-students/
The commenters state hourly rates of 800-1400 ($24.68-$43.18 ), 750 ($23.13), and 500 ($15.42). Maybe those dudes are really well qualified (and maybe they are inside of Bangkok). As someone who has a lot of experience in Thailand, I trust your word; I had no idea the going rate was that low. @.@

I'm sure you've heard of the 80-120 thousand won/hour one-on-ones in big name companies with 'upper management'. How often do you land those? You're more likely to get the 20-40/hour and be happy, if anything. Same-same.

OK, but the first comment I read said, "Over the past 5 years I have constantly had more extra work than I could handle at 800-1400/hr. I turn new gigs down monthly".
