It seems that Koreans, rather than moving beyond their primitive need to spit, are embracing it more. Yesterday I had the day off and was about Seoul and was just disgusted at the sheer volume of spitting. The ajoshies with their jurassic park sounds on the one hand, and the younger men letting giant globs of mucus fall from their mouth to the ground. Yesterday it was such a mass phenomenon that I'm sure the situation is getting worse, not better. Vile, vile, vile behavior from people who want us to admire their 'culture'.

And I haven't even mentioned the snot rocket ajoshies that I had the pleasure of observing. Confused

Honestly, do Koreans have no clue as to how primitive this behavior makes them look to others. Or do they just not care?

Maybe they were celebrating MLB's opening day.

What is really disgusting...is seeing the women doing the same thing! I have seen some beauties..all painted up with looks to die for and spitting! How unlady like is that?! No sophistication at all! No class.

I don't care all that much about spitting outside. Although I do think it should be common courtesy to spit in a sewer grate or alley rather than right on the sidewalk.

What I find completely appalling though, is spitting INSIDE BUILDINGS (to be fair, I've seen that a few times in Canada too).
Someone has to clean that up, you god damn animals!

The major irritation I experience whenever I saw someone do this evolved into rage after put down a water bottle in a hallway while I tied my shoes, and when I picked it up I got someone's APOKSHFCLOSBNDIPGUSGR_vh@((@#&tB$@&mucus horror on my hand.
I just about threw up.

That sums up Korea to me. A lot of nice people here, but it's pretty uncouth. [And buying expensive items (e.g. Equus, handbags) doesn't make one classy.]

With regard to the spitting, maybe it is seasonal because of the Yellow Dust?

I've had the urge to spit recently. Maybe the yellow dust. I try to hit the bushes or roads.

Uni student was coming up the stairs in one of the outdoor subway stations and I was headed down, he didn't look up and just spit in front of him, got my dress shoes. He apologized profusely, while I lamented that "THE JAPANESE DON'T DO THIS!" Very Happy I felt bad for saying that afterwards as he continued to apologize, trying to wipe it off with his hand. I just laughed it off.

I see women of ALL ages do it at the bus stop--teens, young adults, mothers, grandmothers etc. Not very becoming of a woman. I see kids do it too. It's a disgusting habit.

Here's the thing. They'll still be doing it when the 2018 olympics come to town. But if the Western media dares mention it, or the piles of trash everywhere, the K-media will go crazy. How dare you mention this. You are guests in Korea and you are dishonoring our culture. We made great efforts to put together the world's best ever olympics, and introduce the foreigner to Korea food and the culture, but you only report on spitting, garbage, insane traffic, eating dog, pushing, staring, and other things that Koreans dio not do. Please only the reporting on things listed on 'List for Foreigner See Korea Visiting'. Please not the reporting on spitting which Koreans, with 5000 years the culture, do not do.

Spitting is a foul act. There is no excuse for it. And it just shows that, despite Korea's remarkable economic progress in recent decades, culturally it has stil a long way to go.

I've picked up the habit of spitting outside!

Just something you have to get used to.

There's lots of reasons to need to spit. If I have a cold, or I'm running, etc. and there's not always a garbage can around. I don't see any problem with spitting in some bushes, or on the side of a road. But doing it right in front of people, clearing your throat and making people visualize what you're about to purge, and especially doing it inside a building, those are the things I take issue with.

It suddenly occurs to me how glad I am 'dipping' (snuff tobacco) isn't popular here. That + many Koreans' comfort with spitting in public places would be ....*shivers*

Funny, I've never felt the "need" to spit. All the other Westerners here, and a hundred million others back home, have never experienced the "need" to spit. I've had colds, and used to run regularly, but I never had to spit. Do I have super powers that you don't have? Are my nose and throat structured differently from yours? Or was it just that I wasn't raised in a barn. There is no justification for spitting in public, just as there is no justification for urinmating or vomiting.

If you want to spit inside your home that's your prerogative. But public spaces belong to everyone. Different rules apply. And one of them is not depositing your bodily liquids on the street.
