And as for the "all" means "some", then why don't you just type "some". It's not like this is some sort of magic word! We didn't learn 'some' in college! We learned 'some' the same day as 'all' in school, and we learned how they were different too. You're talking like this is some sort of burdensome request, no this is basic English. Like on the level of pluralizing things with an 's' at the end! Again, as I keep on saying- Using 'some' THAT'S WHAT YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO DO!!! |
I can see you are very passionate about proper vocabulary.
So if someone writes 'Godfather was the best movie' do you unload on them with "LIAR! last week you said Goodfellas was the best movie! You must say 'one of the best' movies.THAT'S WHAT YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO DO!!! I can not be expected to decifer your cryptic talk of 'best'!!"

And again "When I say 'all black people are uneducated and on welfare', I really just mean some, don't you know that?". That's what you're saying. |
Ok, I'll play along. Yes, this is exactly right. Any sane person would understand the speaker means "some" or "most". I mean come on, we've all heard of Oprah. I mean 'most' of us! I mean 'a lot' of us! Ah, forget it. |

We're not talking about a movie, we're talking about judgments of an entire nation of people, where most of us live and work, and where many of us have relationships with people of that nation who are raised in that culture.
It's not the same as arguing over football teams or movies.

Any sane person would strongly suspect the person of being a bigot. For one, the evidence might not support their view, in spite of their insistence. Also, we can perceive the motivation and sentiment behind their statement. |

This is exactly the kind of thing I'm talking about Herr G.
You use loaded language, exaggerate, no evidence, etc. and then claim to be able to look into the hearts and minds of other posters, or rather ones who you disagree with but whose statements you can't show are erroneous--voila! They're racists! |

Using hyperbole for effect is only good communication when such hyperbole is unlikely to be misunderstood. Given modern western culture strongly encourages people to actively seek out things at which to take offense, one would probably be wise to avoid hyperbole with regards to matters of race, gender, and so forth if one wishes to be understood. Conversely though, it's probably best to personally resist that cultural trend and give your interlocutor the benefit of the doubt where possible. The fellow who says, "Koreans are rude," probably isn't meaning to imply that literally every single Korean in the world is rude, so it's best to either read him as engaging in hyperbole or at least ask for clarification. |
