Fascinating blog post (not mine) about Korean attitudes toward Korean women marrying foreign men. Doesn't really seem as if much has changed since 1988.
Writing about 'prejudice against intermarriage'...in 1988 and 1998

choice quote: "Korea's Democratic Party leader Kim Han-gil, said that 'the reason white men really like Korea is to chase after Korean women'"
Do you agree that the reason white men really like Korea is to chase after Korean women? |

Sounds like a racist assertion. |

No offense, but hasn't much of this territory been covered in other threads? And some of the subject matter could arguably be said to give rise to concerns which have been addressed in the thread on Mixed-Race children in Korea, no?
I'm sure most white men don't come to Korea to prey on Korean women, but who can blame them for trying? Korean women are fetching. I'm often flummoxed by the number of, shall we say, plain, foreigner men I see with outright knockout Korean women. But if they are attracted to one another, see fit to invest their time and energy into one another, what concern is it of mine? It's challenging to be an interracial relationship anywhere, but yes, Korea offers its own special set of challenges. My Korean BF was greeted with approval when he told his coworkers he was dating a foreigner. But then they found out I wasn't a white foreigner, and proceeded to ask him why he didn't just wait to meet a "nice Korean girl" instead. So these things cut many ways.
Also, I fear that rather than provoke thoughtful commentary about mixed race couples in Korea, this thread is likely to invite the eventual vacuous comment about how Korean women are tired of tiny penises.
As a woman who has had the privilege of sampling partners from a variety of races and endowments, I can say from experience that size makes no difference if a man doesn't know how to make good of his implements. Or it may just be a reflection of the limited sexual experience of some Korean women that they're so eagerly racked by the "ecstasy" of sex with a foreigner? Again, it shouldn't be of much importance so long as the two people in question are genuinely attracted to one another. |

I agree with that.
With the regard the OP, I see it like this;
you go to a restaurant to order your preferred food. They just happen to provide some nice side dishes but that's not necessarily why you went there.
There are also a lot of people that have been here longer term and to be honest, you just make the best of whats available.
I think the article doesnt really give much credence to the Korean girls either. Unless they judge that western men approach a relationship using a more 'one sided' method (for example physical force or trickery), they must surely realise that there is some reason that Koreans 'choose' us?
I think the whole concept of 'choice' is lost on some people... |

It's the main reason white men come back to Korea, and a strong reason why white men remain in Korea. It has nothing to do with coming to Korea for the first time. |

While it doesnt apply to anyone on Daves, there are a lot of white guys who act this way towards Asian women.

Sadly, a lot of American media encourages this sort of behavior. Its somehing most people find disgusting, but sure you can think of a friend or two who act like this back home. |

I disagree (you dont have to agree with that).
I think the main reason people come back here, is familiarity - better the devil you know and all that.
Plus, once youve been here, its a lot easier to return than to go to another country. Most people I know who've secured jobs in other countries, have not returned here. Those who havent, came back.
I also know A LOT of people that wouldn't touch a Korean people with a stick, and have chosen celibacy over sex or a relationship with a Korean person (I must admit, if I ever broke up with my girlfriend, Id go back to French or European chicks without any doubt).
I dont know a single (pardon the pun) person who is dating a Korean.
Korean girls imo, just arent that special. I just happen to like mine... |

Korean women are goddesses and I'm sure it is a big reason TEFLers come back again and again (that and being unable to get a job in their home countries) |

No. Men chase women and there's Korean women in Korea. But decent eye candy around does help make the place more bearable. It's got to factor in somehow I guess. If the women were complete dogs you'd probably see a lot fewer guys marrying them and staying here long term. Gotta love the irony though; invite a bunch of foreigners to work in the country and then get mad at them for dating the locals.
Only a select number of guys here are into Korean women at all, and many downright avoid dating them (even though they'll admit some are attractive). They certainly aren't for everyone. Indians, Middle Easterners, and Southeast Asian guys do seem to have a fetish for them, maybe from all the K-dramas that get broadcast there. But Korean guys don't seem as threatened by them, maybe because they perceive them to be lower on their little made-up hierarchy system.
Korean women aren't a bad catch at all, but they aren't as coveted by foreigners as some Koreans would like to think. It's kind of like believing K-pop is world famous or everyone loves Korean food... um, not really so don't flatter yourselves too much. |

Yup, that's my take on it as well. I certainly didn't come here for them. |

It's an exaggerated stereotype, but people go to China and Japan for the culture, SE Asia for wine, women, and weather, and Korea for the money/see the world factor. |

"My brethren" lol
Nice one, trying to paint me and all white men as creepy scumbags. Just you posting that implies you personally have a problem with white guys, particularly ones dating asians.
And how about your "brethren"? How are they making you look?
What you've done is equivalent to someone posting a link to a site about random unemployed alcoholic native americans who commit crimes... in the hopes of stereotyping all native americans together. Good job, man! |
