|
|
I stumbled upon this movie while I was on the IMDB site looking up some info on actor David Janssen, who played Dr. Richard Kimble in the 1960's version of The Fugitive.
Although it had a star-studded cast, it was a box-office bomb, and is on many "worst movies of all time" lists.
A review in Brassey's Guide to War Films by Alun Evans was critical, calling the film "Arguably the worst war picture made in the last quarter of the 20th century"
The IMDB user rating is 2.8, and they describe it as "A noisy and absurd re-telling of the great 1950 invasion of Inchon during the Korean War which was masterminded by General Douglas MacArthur."
When the film was first released for a special one-night-only premiere in Washington D.C. in May 1981, running at 140 minutes, it was almost booed off the screen which resulted in its nationwide release being canceled.
This film cost $46 million dollars to produce and was largely financed by Sun Myung Moon's Unification Church. The United States Department of Defense supplied 1,500 American troops (stationed in Korea) as extras. When they found out the Unification Church was one of the financial backers, they withdrew support and asked that credit be removed.
"The Korean tank commanders were ruthless; during idle time between takes, they would physically abuse their crew members with slaps, punches and repeated laps running around and crawling under the tanks. Since a peace treaty was never signed (to this day there's just a cease fire in existence) and filming was just minutes distance from the DMZ, the Korean soldiers take things seriously."

It took me a while to realize you aren't talking about the made for TV movie "McArthur" starring Gregory Peck in the role as McArthur, Peck being one of the greatest actors of all time. Now that movie was good and I liked it. |

Yeah, Peck was great. But Laurence Olivia was no slouch either....though he did not seem to help this movie much. |

The movie was extremely cheesy, which is why people were walking out on it. However it was overall definitely worth watching, I liked it too. |

Haven't seen the movie myself but Moonies were definitely in bad odour in early 80's. When MAD magazine chose Moonies over Hari Kristiana to lampoon religious whackos and nut jobs, well that was it, Korea had made No.1 finally, at least in something. Mind you, Moonies have been supplanted by Islamist suicide bombers and don't scare people anymore. |

Inchon is easy to pick up on Youtube and the good aspects of the film outweigh the bad aspects. It's worth watching. |
