If that's what they want to do, then why not? As I said before, there are no major public health issues related to spitting in public. I can't understand why it offends people so much, when it has absolutely no bearing on them.
Just ignore it folks. If you're getting yourself worked over such a silly little thing, then I suggest you are the 'moron'. |
So you take no issue with people expelling bodily fluids in public? Don't see how that might a problem for some?
I'm curious, where are you from and how did that view go over back home? |

Uni student was coming up the stairs in one of the outdoor subway stations and I was headed down, he didn't look up and just spit in front of him, got my dress shoes. He apologized profusely, while I lamented that "THE JAPANESE DON'T DO THIS!" |
After visiting Japan, I came back to Korea and this same phrase was going through my head all the time. Huge difference in overall manners between the two countries.
And what's with all the spit apologists? If you think that's not disgusting you've been here too long. |

Why stop there? What if they wanted to poop all over the streets too, and wipe it on random walls, then why not, right? If you just avoid the poop itself it has absolutely no bearing on you... no reason to be offended or judge it in any way. Hope you don't step on any by accident though.
By the way, the large amount of uncleaned street pizzas (puke) on the streets is nasty too, but at least that can be blamed on alcohol, instead of habit.
Some of us are weird like that; we don't want to see nasty bodily fluids all over the sidewalks we walk on every day. Call us crazy I guess. |

I'd venture to say it's one in the same. Blaming things on alcohol consumption is a habit. |

Are you a spitter? |
If you mean, do I spit in public? The answer is generally no unless it is completely unavoidable e.g. a heavy bout of coughing that brings up a lot of phlegm. |

Because faeces can be damaging to our health, and doesn't smell very nice, so it's quite clear why people don't do it in public. I guess spitting just doesn't bother me that much. I was brought up playing and watching sports where spitting is common place, so maybe I'm just used to it. |

Yea i really dont notice it, but now that james mentioned it, i did grow up playing baseball so maybe thats why i dont notice it. If i do notice it, i hate the kind of spit where its like they disapprove of you. That makes me spit back in disapproval. Lol
If i ever see a woman i know spitting in public, i do get mad at her though.
I swear i tried to notice any spitting in the past few days but i never heard it. Maybe i am in areas with young people ? No idea |

Do they? Where all in China have you been to see that? I'm doing a study on this very thing and your input could be valuable seeing as how you appear to be an expert on that. |

Many people of humble origins try to hide the fact that they were raised on farms or in abject poverty. People who spit in public spaces are just being honest about themselves, and letting everyone around them know about their upbringing, personal hygiene standards, and limited educational background. Nothing wrong with that, per say.
What I do have against spitting, aside from the fact that it is a filthy, third world habit, is that it makes the sidewalks and walkways look absolutely disgusting, with black blotches of spittle everywhere that never really go away, and just get worse with time.
The sidewalk outside my office was re-surfaced about 6 months ago. It gave the neighborhood a clean, refreshing feel, almost as if the residents were willingly choosing to take a step towards the future. Now it is covered with black gobs of ajeossi cancer-spittle. The residents and pedestrians just couldn't let a sidewalk go clean, so they spit spit spit spit all over it, making it look like a filthy slum again.
Yes, I know that the really dark spots on the sidewalk are dried pieces of gum. But those other semi-dark spots? Cancer-spittle from farmers, peasants, the low-class, the educationally disadvantaged uncivilized people who refuse to be dragged into the 21st century by the collars of their shirts. By all means, spit in the dirt, spit in the bushes, spit in the stream, spit into trash cans and into buckets -but once you spit a black gob of cancer-spit onto a public pedestrian walkway, the rest of us don't need to "understand your special situation", as you are trashing a public space with zero concern for the people you share it with. |

As bad as the spitting is in Korea, it's worse in China. I was in Shanghai airport, about to board the plane, when an airport worker standing nearby spat on the carpeted floor Then, as if to make my last sight of China even more memorable, he rubbed it in with his shoe. |
