Mickey Rooney, the longtime actor who became a star box attraction in the 1930s and 1940s, has died at age 93, according to Variety and several other websites.

I was never a huge fan. Youth-oriented comedies from my grandparents' era don't hold enough interest for me to track down.
I think I only remember seeing him in The Black Stallion and Bill, where he was good enough I suppose. Apparently, he was in National Velvet, so I guess I saw him there as well.
One thing I do recall, was his being interviewed on Canadian TV a few nights before he was going to get an Honorary Oscar.
INTERVIEWER: Are you pleased about this award?
ROONEY(totally straight-faced): No. No. I'm not.
INT: You're not pleased?
ROONEY: No, I'm displeased.
INT: Why?
At which point Rooney began yelling at her, calling her by her first name(as if he had known her forever), saying that of course he was pleased, how could you ask such a dumb question?

That's a great story, I guess he got sick of the stupid questions.
What was the last year he actually acted?
93 - well done! |

Many years ago he stayed at an Orlando Hotel where I was working as a Bell Hop, and I had to give him a ride to the airport in the hotel van. I don't like to talk bad about the recently departed, but let's just say the above account does not surprise me. |

Well, he was on stage the night that Amy Winehouse had her meltdown in a London theatre, and that was 2010. Not sure about screen roles.

That particular news show was infamous for asking inane questions, so yeah, it was good to see someone call them on it for once.

EDIT:
According to his IMDB page, he was doing films fairly regularly right up to the end, and even had a couple in production.
Oh yes, and he was in Breakfast At Tiffany's, as the highly stereotyped Japanese landlord.

Last of the Hollywood legends.
Who would be the oldest "big name" left? |

I dunno. But Rooney's name would have been removed from this list some time within the last 24 hours. As you can see, it's a very short list, and none of the other names were anywhere near as well-known as his.
Especially when you consider that he was still working at the time of his death, this really is the "end of an era", as they say. |

Requiem for a Heavyweight, Rooney and Jackie Gleason verbal sparring. As good as it gets!
Yeah he was an icon. |
