Crazy that after all these years in Korea I've looked the other way when I'm at places like Pizza Hut and they ask about a discount card.
I got a pizza last night and they told me that I can get a good discount by getting a discount card from a phone company.
I know this is a somewhat stupid question but if anyone has any insight on how to get discount card(s) it would be most appreciated.
Thanks! |

If you have SK phone service, you have to go to one of their main stores and ask for a membership card. You may have to have them help you set register the card though. |

Its crazy I know. My friend bought a new wallet and was counting all the club/membership/point/discount cards he was carrying and it turned out to be 16 cards. I'm sure the women have even more cards than that. But if you don't get them you wind up paying more for everything. |

Ditto on that. My previous boss carries a BAG with discount cards, over 50. I donno why, however, he uses 2 of them virtually everywhere, maybe another 2 in some rare cases.
The discount schemes in Korea are bugging foreigners as hell I want to have a single price, agree/disagree, that's it |

Can someone definitively explain to me what the Homeplus/Emart/etc. points cards do?
I thought at Home Plus it gave you access to certain sales / discounted prices, but then I was told you accrued points to be redeemed...I never found out when. I used it constantly though, I must have a bunch of points piled up by now.
Now I live by an Emart and every time I check out they ask me if I have a points card. I eventually asked them whats the difference between having one and not having one, the woman laughed and said there is no difference. (?!) |

HomePlus sends you coupons in the mail for 1000, 3000, or 5000won off (maybe more) depending on how many points you got that month.
It is a drag to have to pull out these cards every time you want to buy something, but when in Rome...
And if you prefer to use cash, you are typically just shite out of luck regarding any discounts. |

E-mart point card is the same - discount "checks", valid for at most a month.
I did get about 100.000KRW worth of discounts in a year though, so it's not useless. And it's not an either/or card - if you have some discount card, you can use it at e-mart (I don't know if ANY works), and you can still use the points card. There is no downside to them, in essense. |

They're a pain to remember & produce every time you transact, they open you to market tracking & targeted advertising, they compel you to spend more to gain "benefits" you neither need nor want, they effectively turn you into consumer sheep, etc.

I buy there because I need to buy there (too far to go elsewhere, and I prefer fresh, non-frozen food).
So, the discounts are just a bonus, and I don't mind carrying the e-Mart card since I only have 2 other cards with me anyway. |
