Is it legal = gray area. There is no law to prevent it.
Can they require you to open an account in a particular BANK (not a specific branch) to have your payroll sent to = yes; they may be using the bank to provide their payroll rather than having their office staff do it.
Open the account and withdraw/transfer your pay each month to put it into the account of your choice in the bank of your choosing.

This is very common at a lot of companies (not just hagwons). Koreans won't consider it an issue so you'll likely just annoy your boss by making an issue out of it.
Set up online banking and just transfer the money to your regular bank account. |

My hagwon (okay, go ahead, I know: dungeons, whips-n-chains, blah, blah) is trying to force me to open a bank account at KB bank against my will.
I have several other bank accounts and have lived in Korea for 6 years. No other employer has ever cared at all which bank I had.
I just simply do not wish to open an account there. It's not that I hate the bank. I know nothing about it. It's more the principle of the thing. Why should I have to?
They say that if I want to get paid, then they'll only pay into an account at that bank.
Nowhere is it stated in my contract that I have to open an account at a specific bank.
Also, nowhere in Korean law (as far as I can tell) is it stated that any person has to open any bank account anywhere PERIOD.
I know that this may seem trivial, but I've put up with a lot with these people (shocker I know) and this is the straw that's about to break the camel's back! |
I had this happen to me as well. It is annoying, but it's not difficult to just transfer the money to your main bank account. |

Me too..
it just happened that the bank they wanted me to use was the closest one to the school, so it was more convenient for them. I never saw it as an issue.
Like the other poster said, i just took the money out and put it into my other account - it actually made it easier to save |

Well, so I'm not the only who took issue with this when I worked at a PUBLIC SCHOOL.
I know you're at a private school, but here's my story.
PRO: To make a long story short, they decided (to keep peace and harmony in the relationship )that since I already had several bank accounts(4) already opened at different banks that I didn't have to open another one. They agreed to put the money into one of my already existing accounts. I was happy until..
CON:During that year, I got paid late THREE times because the staff kept changing hands and they failed to tell the new bookkeepers that my account was at a different bank and not with ALL of other employees.
If I had it to do over again, I would oblige and agree to the minor inconvenience. It was hassle for BOTH parties involved. It gave me a somewhat negative memory of public schools.
In actuality, I think it could of easily been avoided if I had just opened another account as they had suggested in the beginning.
When the principal asked me to please renew my contract, I declined.
I NEVER expected to get paid late at a public school.
It's legal...just do it! |

Thanks to you all for the thoughts.
I caved. I actually think that this is a relatively minor issue but the way it was presented was offensive. The head teacher just walked into the office one morning and told me I had to open this account. There was no explanation. There was no "please." There was no "sorry."
It was, as my students like to say "because because."
I hope it's clear why this was offensive to me.
Anyway, screw this noise. I've decided that after 6 years putting up with this crap, enough is enough! At the end of this contract, I'm going back to the gun violence and crime of the US since it's less stressful there. |
