I'm not an American but I wasn't separated from girls when I was 7, and I think it has helped me overall when interacting with women. I didn't have any relationships in middle school and I wasn't 'poof-bashed', although homosexual slurs were the most commonly used insults regardless of whether you were in a relationship or not.
In fact, doing traditional dancing with a female partner actually improved my confidence with women. At an age where I felt awkward when talking to girls, awkward about my body, and awkward overall, the experience of dancing with girls helped me overcome a lot of fears about interacting with the opposite sex.
I, for one, think that girls and boys dancing together at middle school age in a safe environment is a good thing. |
1. You are not American, hence irrelevant on this matter
2. You didn't live in a Confucion culture, so also irrelevant
3. You didn't get a gay-bashing so didn't happen to anybody else either, haha nice try.
4. You have also 'tricked' yourself into believing forced boy-girl interaction was, while horrible in the beginning, was worthwhile in the end.
I think what you're trying NOT to say is: "I don't want to admit I've been duped." |

Hmmm...
I was was going to comment on the dancing phenomenon but it looks as though this thread has completely de-railed... |

I think that dancing is mostly for young girls to imitate. Girls aged 10 to 16 or so with dreams of joining the ranks. Or maybe it's an expression of unity or something, who knows? |

You're absolutely right. I'm not an American, nor was I brought up in an out of date restrictive culture, nor was I "gay bashed", and I've been 'tricked' to enjoy interacting with females.
In fact, I'm a well adjusted, happy adult. What the *beep* am I doing posting about K dancing on an anonymous internet message board? I've got better things to do.
Thanks, Chon. |

1. That's not what I said.
2. People who say, are usually not. People who are, have no need to say it.
3 and 4. lack of civility indicates that you're blocking out this experience, too. Yes, you can also be happy and well adjusted by blocking out traumatic experiences.
What you wrote was your feeling that 'this can't be right and this must not be right'. If you want to rewrite your post with reasoned arguments, you can. |

Good point it's like the background dancers, prob with less talent, to, say, Michael Jackson, are the stars. And each one, I think, is like a spice girl or smurf. There's a scary boy/girl, funny, quiet, nice, etc.... But unlike the spice girls, they will never go away. I don't understand why they went the way of the dodo in the US, there's plenty of cash involved. England still has no shame with One Direction, which should be called many Directions, because they are not straight. |

Did you sleep through the 90s? Backstreet Boys, NSYNC, and many more all had that type of dancing. |
Here's the difference. I, like many, many others, am not particularly fond of synchronized dancing, so I don't remember those bands. I've heard their names, but that's it. Dancing boy bands were only a very small part of the pop culture back home - one slice out of a twenty slice pizza. Here synchronized dance groups are the entire god-damned pizza. Syncronized dancing is omnipresent. Ever been in a room with a Korean watching a music show. Of the twenty groups on the program, you know how many are doing synchronized frigging dancing? Twenty. To say that we had dancing boy bands back home is neither here nor there. It was never inescapable back home. As the OP said, here it is in commercials, on the bus, on the elevator screen, in the subway, in shops. Not only is it omnipresent here, it's seriously lame. Boys dancing together in song after song. "Out for a pint tonight, Jin ho?" "Sorry Ha nul, I have dance practice." |

Right now at all universities in te land groups of freshers are vigourously practicing these dances for the amusement of the seniors at MT. If there were no synchronised dancing, the sniors would have to dream up more humiliating acts for the new people, and other ways to make the naive girls drink too much soju so they can...... |

Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears, Mark Wahlberg, and pretty much every Top 40 act out there today is a small part of pop music culture and you haven't the foggiest who they are? It's not the whole pie, but it's a lot more than one slice. And yes, its 19 out of 20 slices of Korea's pie. After all its not like the number one song out right now (Pharrell) has any synchronized dance performances live...
While I do think you're being way too "Get off my lawn you kids who are having fun and dancing", I am against flash mobs and their synchronized stupidity so I think I'll agree to accept your view. If it gets rid of flash mobs and those idiots who wear headphones all on the same song, I'll sign up to send the Kpop dance groups to the moon.
I guess the important thing is time, place, manner. Not randomly in public. Save it for the stage you freakin kids. And you should be learning waltzes and fan dances in school you kids! |

One must read sites that one does not agree with in order to exercise the mind. I also visit LewRockwell.com and Townhall and enjoy reading George F. Will, Pat Buchanan and William S. Lind.
While I agree with a few conservative authors very strongly (Buchanan and Lind), I find the general level of "conservative" writing to be unpalatable and ill-informed. I don't agree with much on more left-leaning sites, but I find that they aren't as guilty of the obvious head-slapping idiocy that I find in FoxNews Frat Boy conservatism. At least they can approach science properly even though they insult religion, which I do not care for. Yes, someone can actually appreciate both science and religion. |
