Hello!

I've surfed the forums for a while, but this is my first post. Without further ado...

I'm teaching English here with my wife and we're looking to make this our career for the foreseeable future. She already has a Master's, but I only have my Bachelor's, and this is limiting some of the more lucrative options that we would like to keep open.

It's come to my attention that Korea University has a Master's in English Education, and I've done some research to find that this Master's is recognized as equivalent to a Master's in the United States (so please, let's not go down that route).

My MAIN question is: does anyone know if it's possible to complete the program in one year, full-time?

My SECONDARY questions are:

1) Can anyone vouch for the program? Did you feel like it equipped you with the skills/theories you need to teach effectively?

2) Does anyone have any experience (positive or negative) receiving university jobs either in Korea or internationally with this degree?

Any other information is welcomed, of course.

Thanks!

What do you want to do with the degree? If you just want to stay in Korea then yeah I'd say go for it. Don't expect the degree to qualify however if you want to teach in the middle east. Most of these masters programs, whether it is in the west or Korea, are all the same crap/paper chase anyhow. Large classes, not much academic support and joke entry requirements. They like taking your money though.

If you can do it for cheap in Korea, then why not? The network you'll get out of it might help you get a un position in Seoul as well.

I am ABD (all but dissertation in KU EngEd PhD program). I'll answer your questions briefly here, but feel free to send me a PM if you have more.

1. Complete the program in one year-no

2. Equipped me? Yes (MAs and PhDs take coursework together). Several class options available throughout the week. I'd say roughly 75% of classes are English lectured.

3. I already had a good university job in Korea, but a degree from Korean University is very respected within Korea. The 75% and 100% scholarships available to foreigners is very attractive as well.
