Let me break it down to you based on my personal experience.
When I first decided to come to Korea I was in America, without a teaching job and washing dishes at an old folks home and substituting at the local public schools. I thought why am I here scrubbing dishes when I have just spent the better part of 5 years at college to NOT be doing this?
I also have a passion to travel. I went on Craigslist to find a teaching job--struck out there but saw a Korean job listing. I thought hey I could travel and see Asia AND make money? Sign me up. So I came here. At that time I never ever looked at Asian girls in America in any sexual way, I was not attracted to them.
Now I'm married to one.
But it wasn't because I came here searching for one, it was because I wanted a family, and being that I was in Korea, knew I wasn't going to be leaving for quite some time because I needed to save money, AND being at the age when one starts a family, AND happening to meet a woman I clicked with, it just happened. But it's an insult to assume I, or any particular foreigner, let alone MOST foreigners come here to screw Korean women. That's assassin. |
The sock assassin.
Lol
Asinine...yes? |

Do you agree that the reason white men really like Korea is to chase after Korean women? |
It's such a stupid question, and the idea that this phenomenon is exclusive to Korea is so stupid. Of course that is why some guys came to Korea, that's why most guys go anywhere. It determines the club they choose on a Friday night and in some cases the major they choose in college.
Why do most guys avoid Saudi Arabia? Because they aren't attracted to Saudi Arabian women? No, it's because they can't date them.
Add women that could be dated along with the money in Saudi Arabia and all of the sudden you would have a bunch of foreigners flocking there earning money and chasing Saudi Arabian girls every weekend. |

Now there is even statistical proof that non-Koreans are interested in dating and relating with Koreans (both female and male).
http://www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/news/nation/2014/04/116_155293.html
I suppose the real question then becomes, what % of Koreans are open to dating foreigners?
If 90% of foreigners are open to dating Koreans, does that play into Korean insecurities and concerns about foreign men "chasing" after Korean women? |

It's a fairly safe bet that the people doing the inviting (Education Ministry) aren't the ones who get mad at us for dating locals. |
You sure about that?
I worked for them once and I've never seen a more conservative, insecure group of people in all my life. Even by Korean standards they were bad. They had cameras outside the teachers apartments and would keep all sorts of records. They knew who was bringing back girls, who had a steady girl, etc. and yes, it affected their attitude and rehiring behavior. Believe it or not. |
When was this and in what capacity was it?
As for the article itself, that was a long time ago. Even in 2008, some of this racism was there. But something has changed over the last 3 or so years. Seems many don't care anymore. I can even talk to women teachers at my schools nowadays without the c -blocking and dirty looks like I use to get and the hatred I use to feel when I first came here last decade. Not sure if it's just me. Maybe other folks have different views or recent experiences. |
This was about two years ago, and I guarantee little has changed there. It wasn't just the cameras they'd use for information, but they'd also use the gyopos in the office and pump them for personal info on everyone in the office. Only reason we found out was because one gyopo was quitting and told as all the details. There also was A LOT of made up rumors about the foreigners from random office workers who knew nothing. Management cared more about private lives than work performance, and that's been true of a few jobs I've been at here... as well as gyopos being used for inside info, etc.
They may not want to appear to be making a big stink about foreigners dating locals, but many still do not like it and it's still a rarity and not mainstream at all. I think in the modern world they are finally getting it that it's rude to stare and yell stuff, but as for how they truly feel, that's more up in the air. |

The survey was carried out by 'a local matchmaking firm Duo and a hallyu promoting SNS “Korspot”, whatever that means. My guess is the people surveyed in America and Europe would have already shown an interest in
Korean popular culture. Otherwise the commonest answer from males as to whether they'd date a Korean girl or not would be along the lines of 'sure, why not, as long as she doesn't make me eat dog meat/get a hair cut like Kim Jong Un's etc...etc...
Actually one of the comments underneath pretty much summed it up

The survey was done by K-Pop fans so it's just more K-Pop nonsense. Do you really think 39% of women in the world want to date Big Bang members? |

Maybe, but it's also a bit of ego stroking. They want to believe they are the best and most desired, and this skewed "study" helps them with that whether true or not.
However, they should run a counter study: What percent of Koreans are open to dating a foreigner? That figure would NOT stroke their ego and would probably be fairly low. Or even more specifically, what percent of Korean MEN would be open to letting a Korean relative or female or they know date a foreign man? That would be a lower figure almost guaranteed.
But what a skewed article anyway:
Quote: |
As to the 10 percent of the respondents not having such desire, most of them said the cultural gap is too big to overcome (40 percent). Other reasons pointed out Koreans are so diligent they wouldn’t have enough energy left for dating, or possibly lack liberal minds. |
Can we really believe that someone responded that Koreans are just too "diligent" to date? Guaranteed Koreans themselves wrote that question as it's THEIR stereotype about themselves, not necessarily what outsiders believe. And... anyone who's dated actual Koreans knows they aren't any more "diligent" than the average person. Sure they stay at the office long hours if they are forced to but other than that.... |

You guys do realize the worst are Korean mothers and who their eldest son marries? The oldest son must marry a Korean girl, even if the son was born and raised in America.
In the end most Koreans don't really care who marries a foreigner, as long as it doesn't involve their immediate family, AND/OR their eldest son... lol |

I'm okay with the stereotype as long as they say the reason 1,700,000 Koreans have immigrated to the USA and thousands of Koreans study there is to chase black tail.
Since I'm not very white, maybe the Korean Democratic Party considers me to be "one of the good guys," but if my 74 year old pops comes to visit, he'll definitely be coming strictly for Korean poontang since he's one of those dirty white boys.
jvalmer, your avatar resembles the Korean Democratic Party's remark! |

Not surprising this topic is an issue here in South Korea. Think about the discussion back in the USA in the 40s & 50s regarding whites marrying blacks. No difference in that conversation then than this conversation now IMHO. Marry who you want to marry and let it be. I married a Korean woman, never had intentions of getting married when I came back in 2004, but now I am happily married with a child and I honestly could give a shit what any Korean thinks of my reasons or purpose for getting married.
Nothing is being said about the hoards of Korean men marrying SE Asian women because the South Korean women won't have anything to do with them. In fact, many Korean women would prefer to stay single than to marry a Korean man. I have been told this by more than several dozen women who during conversations with my wife told her how lucky she really was to have a man that actually comes home at night rather than sitting out at the sojo parlors with juice girls or in the pink light district with their hooker friends.
If the picture can be painted to make Koreans, and Korean men in particular look better, then the media is all over it like flies on shit. Honestly, I don't care for a second what they do or think, just stay the hell out of my face with their racist remarks! Now back to your regular scheduled conversation |

Actually that male stripper incident was kinda big back home. It made the shock jock/TMZ rounds, probably got written up by all the legitimate outlets as well. There were actually some serious issues there as the residents might have been suffering from dementia and that their stored commissary money was apparently used to stuff dollar bills down the stripper's pants, and that the staff probably raided their accounts in order to make that happen. |
