Yeah if they say hello, its cool. If they point me out, sometimes I tell them they should say hello when they see a foreigner, and they usually do. It makes good feelings.
In my classes, no one disrespects me though. I wont let it. I embarass them by saying they are disturbing the class, and then the other kids jump on them, problem solved. |

The don't-let-them-talk-to-you-in-panmal thing I can kind of understand, though I'm on the fence about it.
On the one hand, I encourage students becoming more comfortable talking to foreigners, in the hopes that no one I teach ever runs screaming from a foreigner asking them "Where's the bus station?" on the street. On the other hand, treating foreigners with the same respect they show other Koreans is a good habit to instill as well I would think.

I really really hate it when I see people (adults) speaking banmal to foreigners.
Can you just say "왜 반말해 썅년아? "
and spit on the ground?
man... u guys really have to say banmal back and use the right inflections to get your point across............ with kids i dunno tho... |

You shouldn't use cuss words with kids. (i'm sorry if anyone misunderstood what I said)
But 썅년아 is basically the equivalent of "wh.ore of a bitch." You can use this to a woman or a man, but it is like the most insulting thing you can say. haha. guaranteed to make their eyes big and possibly cause a heart attack. haha.
But Korean adults (who meet each other for the first time) who use banmal to each other end up getting mad at each other and starting fights. Its really insulting. As a foreigner, if an adult speaks banmal to you, you should stand up for yourself and blame them for making you angry (first) when they spoke banmal to you first.
The moment you use banmal with someone, should be a very special moment when you become friends and close with each other. But to use it when you first meet is very very insulting. Unless you are a 70 year old grandpa... then it is okay to use it with you. |

I'm not trying to get Korean students to kiss my shoes but the behavior of middle school students does piss me off.
I was pushing my baby boy in his trike with my parents who were visiting. Some middle school boys start "talking" (more like belittling my father). They're like "Where are you from?" My father answered politely, then they respond "Yeah, I'm from Korea, Korea, Yeah." In a mocking tone.
I felt like punching him in the face. My father is 72 years old and very nice. If a 14 year old in Canada talked that way to an adult man he'd get a punch in the face. (and if a Korean student did that to a Korean man I think he would too.)
I'm always shocked at how rude "normal" behavior is here. |

Just stare them down next time. If they dont break the stare, step up and handle your business. What's a little blood money in the grand scheme of things? |
