I went to the Daejeon Costco a few weeks ago and they didn't carry Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal anymore. I'm hoping it was just a temporary out of stock thing though. Has anyone tried those pre-made burritos? |

I haven't seen the Cinnamon Crunch cereal for a few weeks. The chicken burritos are good. Just nuke them and maybe add some salsa and/or cheese. |

Do they have frozen burritos at Costco now? |

Stan, there are two problems I've encountered in the past couple of years with Costco and stuff disappearing. I'm not saying either applies, but they are possibilities. 1) They stopped carrying Special K Red Berries because of a problem with how they were categorized with the KFDA. After about a year of nagging both Costco and the KFDA the issue was resolved and they started carrying it again. 2) They removed any product that contains GMO. For a long time they had the Nature Valley Granola Bars (the harder ones) and they stopped carrying those because the factory they were buying them from used GMO. Apparently they could have got them from either South Africa or France, but there was a cost issue. Again I found this out after bugging Costco for a long time about it. Thankfully they have replaced those with the Costco brand ones, which are much cheaper anyway. |

I've been noticing more and more Costco products for resale in convenience stores, especially the soft drinks and candy, but other products, too. One school store where I used to teach also used to sell individual Costco products, even Kirkland brand. The resell market is huge here and that means that Costco creates secondary economic benefits. |

It's interesting you mentioned this. Near the subway station where I live, a foreign food snack shop opened up and they have many items that appear to have come from Costco, most notably fruit by the foot. |

Those snack shops are breeding like mice. In a span of 1 week, about 4 of those stores opened up in my neighborhood. |

FWIW, Costco is not considering a big move to China so Australia, Taiwan, Japan, and South Korea remain the focus in Asia for Costco.

Interesting how much Costco has studied consumers. The value of the food courts to the Korean consumers are very important to understanding the popularity of the stores in Korea.
Quote: |
About a year back, there was a report in a Chinese newspaper that Costco is planning to expand its e-commerce operations in the country and is looking for a local partner. While the company hasn't confirmed the news yet, we believe that Costco will look for e-commerce expansion in the region before opening its physical outlets. The idea behind this strategy is not to invest too much in a market that hasn't been conducive for U.S. retailers and to explore China's huge e-commerce space ($194 billion in 2012) before expanding its retail footprint.
However, an online store will lack Costco's traditional store characteristics that have played a crucial role in its success. At Costco, shopping is not just about prices but the shopping experience as well, which includes a "treasure hunt" experience where shoppers walking around the isles always find something new. Also, they have access to several ancillary services such as food court, photo-center, pharmacy, gas station, etc.
With only online launch in China, Costco won't we able to provide these social experiences. Even if the company alters between its brands in order to recreate the "treasure hunt" experience over the Internet, its ancillary services will be absent. A deep analysis of Costco's sales in the U.S. suggests that while average spending per customer on merchandise has grown slowly over the past four-five years, their spending on ancillary services has increased at a hefty pace. Hence, by not providing these services in China from the outset, Costco's first impression on buyers will not be too strong. This can make it difficult for the company to elevate its brand image in the future.
