Thanks, littlelisa, I may do that. But I'm still not clear on why it would be so much better to transfer than to get a new visa "from scratch."

I already gave the new company all of the documents they need to apply for the E7, including passport-size photos, copies of my diplomas, letters of recommendation, proof of employments, etc. Even if I cancel my visa and leave the country, won't it be a simple matter of the new company e-mailing me the visa issuance number when it's approved, and me going to the Korean consulate in Singapore to get the new visa?

Since you are going to be out of the country you can just as easily do that as switch back and forth from E2-D10-E7.

The only real difference will occur about 5 years from now when you are considering changing to an F5 and you need 5 years of continuous stay on ONE "period of sojourn". Getting a new visa starts the 5-year clock over again whereas the transfer thing doesn't so your time accumulates.

Thanks.

Sorry to keep reviving this thread, but ... handing in ARC card at the airport effectively cancels my visa, right? No need to go to the immigration office?

Correct. The immigration guy at the airport can cancel it for you on the spot. Just make sure to be clear with him that you're cancelling it. Normally he should cancel it when you hand in the ARC but you never know. It might be his first day on the job or something else.
