True.

I feel for the guy. Certainly not his fault but the kids' safety was his nominal responsibility. Reportedly he was "brokenhearted." Understandably.

Just this morning a few of the K-teachers in my school were saying they hoped the VP hung himself for being one of the first off the boat. I doubt my CT's will have much sympathy for the guy...

On the other hand and Steelrails about the captain being "the last to leave a/the ship:"

As I heard it, the ship must be under the captain's control at all times; the captain is supposed to be the first on the ship and the last off. This does not mean that the captain is expected to go down with the ship, but he or she should definitely be coordinating the evacuation of the passengers and the crew until it becomes unsafe or impossible to do so.

( However, the captain's conduct in this incident makes me think that the saying about rats leaving a sinking ship is absolutely true. Mad )

C'mon, most schoolkids will do as their teachers and adults order them. That goes for any country on earth. The passengers were mostly kids. Sadly.
Actually, I think even most adult passengers would feel this way, maybe not so much the "questioning authority" part, but at least being inclined to believe that the "professionals" in charge know what they are doing. But sometimes otherwise competent people incorrectly assess how dire the situation really is -like the Asiana pilot who instructed the passengers to remain seated even as a fire was raging.

It's horribly sad and tragic ... Hopefully, the departed go to a better place and their loved ones overcome their sorrow.

Where did I disagree with that?

I don't expect the captain to stay if all the passengers had been evacuated except those who are listed as being in a flooded area or say, the crew who were working in the engine room when a boiler exploded. In all likelihood, such people are dead and asking the captain to go down with the ship is a overly-dramatic naval mythology. Clearly though, this was a case where the captain should have stayed far longer.

The captain looks like he will spend a lot of time in jail and that is what he seems to deserve for his actions.

The VP of the school who hanged himself, well I can understand why he would do that. the VP was rescued and from what I read he did not flee. He assumed kids were being rescued too.

One teacher managed to get some of her students out but died in the process.

This is a horrible tragedy.

Despite all that, foreigners are still being ferried to Dokdo because... it's important.

http://www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/news/nation/2014/04/251_155727.html

-------------------------
DOKDO —The field trip to Korea’s easternmost islets, Dokdo, can be challenging, to say the least.

A trip starting in Seoul means traveling down to the port city of Donghae, Gangwon Province, taking a ferry to Ulleung Island in North Gyeongsang Province and then another two and half hours on a boat to Dokdo, also in the province. Foreign students on the journey were half excited and half worried, following the tragic sinking of the ferry Sewol.
