I'm due to fly back to visit family in about 5 weeks but I've been very lax in getting my passport renewed. I'm in Busan and from what I understand I have to get a certain delivery agency set up to deliver the damnable thing.
I was going on hearsay that I could fly home and renew it normally but recently did a Google search and have heard that the airline might not allow me to board a flight even though I can enter the country.
What to do... ? |

My personal experience with an American I was supposed to travel with, they will not even check you in if your passport is expired. |

Go to the American Embassy and see how fast you can get a new one. You might need to reschedule flights. I got mine in a few weeks. |

There is a good chance they will not allow you on the plane. You could contact American Airlines (since it's American) and ask. Another problem is how are you going to get through Korean Immigration with an expired passport, will they allow that. Better contact Korean Immigration as well. Don't spend too much time looking around on this. |

Five weeks is more than ample time to get a new passport within Korea. |

If your passport has expired then you are now here illegally and and it also causes your visa to become invalid.
For your visa to be valid, your passport has to be valid.
This is exactly what my country's embassy and Korean immigration have told me. I found this out by my passport expiring, through no fault of my own but an embassy stuff up renewing my passport. I spent one week in Korea illegally as a result but luckily due to business I deal with immigration regularly and had a good relationship with them so they said they'd turn a blind eye to it.
They did inform me of what could happen if they wanted to punish me for it. Right now, if your passport is expired, they can legally arrest you and deport you. They also said if that happened, there'd be no hope of obtaining another visa.
As someone has said above, you won't be able to get past the ticketing counter with an expired passport. The airlines can't legally give you a ticket unless you have a valid passport. |

Short time (< 6 months remaining) and you can fly home but they won't let you return to Korea with less than 6 months remaining. The airline won't be an issue on a non-stop flight but MIGHT not let you board if there is a layover somewhere.
An EXPIRED passport and you have other issues to worry about as well.
Your status of sojourn is only valid for as long as your passport is valid.
If your passport has indeed expired then so has your allowed period of stay in Korea - you would then be in an overstay position and subject to fines as well as issues in trying to get a new visa.

Yikes! So, definitely obtain a new one ASAP and hope no one notices. My visa is good until the end of July at least. |

Your "visa" expired (expires) with your passport (regardless of any dates that may be stamped in it or on your ARC).

So, what you're saying is no matter what I do I'm totally f*cked and I needn't bother? Or that I get my new passport ASAP and try not to get into fistfights with Immigration officers until the new one arrives? I hate to sound flippant, but in the past if my ARC/visa was soon to expire, Immigration typically informed me via mail, email and SMS. My passport lapsed several months ago but I received no notice from Immigration, so something tells me they aren't aware of the situation. |

Most likely immigration doesn't know that your passport has expired. If they kept the expiry date on file then they probably assume that you've renewed it. There's a good chance that they'll notice when you head out of the country though. When they scan your passport the computer might inform them that it's expired. That information is in the part that gets scanned. I don't know if it would automatically notify the guy though. I also don't know if they guy would care. I've never seen someone try to do this. It wouldn't be hard to imagine it happening though. If you have time, get a new one before you leave. |

It appears I'll be using Hanjin as a courier. Can anyone advise me on this process? Do I call them for a pick-up or go to one of their offices? Do they have envelopes ready or should I already have all the stuff tucked away in a big manila envelope? |

You call them and they'll come to you. You can get a money order in US dollars from KEB to pay the US Embassy. You'll need some American size passport photos (2" x 2" or 50mm x 50mm). It only takes two weeks to get a new passport. I've done it. |

Go to the Korean Immigration office now and tell them your dilemma! When you're passport expires you're here illegally. The longer you hold of going to Immigration the nastier it will become for you. |
