Hey Everyone,

I have a situation that is driving me nuts.

I live on the 9th floor of a highrise in the small city of Sokcho. For the past year, I have had to listen to a small dog bark for hours on end when the people are not home. Generally they are gone 12-14 hours a day...sometimes even longer. I have complained to the apartment security office, the apartment management, my school, and have left notes written in Korean on these peoples door. Nothing seems to come of it. My next step is to file a police complaint about the noise. I am so tired of listening to the barking.

I have a dog myself and yes he barks, when it's an appropriate time to do so. ( like someone coming to the door). He does not have separation anxiety and doesn't bark when I am not home. He is a Jindo mix and is 8.5 years old. So, I completely understand dogs barking. What I don't understand is why people choose to own a dog when they clearly don't have the time to take care of it. Or why they continue to allow the dog to bark like it does when it has been clearly brought to their attention that it barks for hours on end when they are not home.

Tonight was my breaking moment. I was sleeping when the dogs barking woke me up at 11pm. I got out of bed and went and complained to the apartment security guy. He came up and knocked and knocked on their door. I tried to explain that they weren't home, but he didn't understand. As I took my dog outside for a pee, we happened to run into the barking dog owners. I tore a strip off of her. I was furious. I am not sure she understood all of my English, but it was clear I was PISSED OFF from the way I was yelling at her. All she kept doing was saying I am sorry, I am sorry.

I am curious to know if others have experienced this type of situation and what you did about it. Is it possible to file a police complaint? If so, does anything come of it? I would move if I could find a place that would accept my dog. People like this make it so difficult for responsible dog owners like me to find housing.

Is it separation anxiety or rather just sadness. Seems to me a lot of chained-up dogs bark out of sheer misery.

Just toss some dog treats laced in rat poison at the dog. Should do the trick.

I think the name of the Korean movie was "Barking Dogs" or something like that, hilarious comedy...guy throws the dog (or drops him) off the balcony, kills dog, goes to get rid of it, and the building maintenence adjoshi roasts the dog and eats it in the boiler room. Great show. Laughed so hard I cried.

Kill him, bung him in the oven and then invite the neighbors round for a feast. Very Happy

If you love dogs, get a pair of ear plugs.

Neutral...how do you know that your dog doesn't bark when there's no one at home?

Thats what I was wondering.

I watched a documentary recently about what dogs do when their owners are not at home. It was distressing for everyone who watched the videoed results of their own dogs behavior. They had no idea their dog was so upset.

Anyway, thats up to you if you choose to ignore the fact your dog is depressed/bored locked up all day and you conciously ignore the fact. If you want to do something about the other dog, it seems youre doing the right thing by complaining- Id just do it more regularly.

something to the effect of;

(politely) Can you ask the people in room 204 to keep their dog quiet please?

Eventually, theyll get sick of you and do something - you however have then become the embodiment of a yapping dog but they know they can shut you up by doing something about the dog.

I have a webcam linked to my smartphone and my neighbors have my number if my dog is barking. My dog just lays in his bed when I'm not home. Neighbors said they've never heard him bark.

So if your dog is barking you can skype your dog?

In the OP's case though, it sounded like the neighbours were never home (although, I guess there are OTHER neighbours), I wondered if maybe the dogs just bark at each other all day.
Shooting the dog shit, so to speak.

I know for a fact that my dog is just fine without me. I have had him since he was 6 months old and he is now 8.5 years. I have never had a complaint about him barking...EVER. He might be bored while I am gone...but I take him for three walks a day and he socializes with other dogs. So, I know for a fact he is a happy dog. He is very familiar with my routine as we have been together for so long.

As for the dog I have been writing about, he is definitely NOT a happy dog. He is left alone for so many hours in a day and I have NEVER seen him out for a walk or socializing with other dogs. This is why I question why they would even have a dog.

I am so stressed and angry about this whole situation. I don't want to have to back up my life and move. I shouldn't have to change my entire life to accommodate a noisy dog. I should feel comfortable living in my apartment and right now, I don't.

As for the comments about eating or killing the dog, I would appreciate it, if you don't have anything constructive to say, please keep your crazy comments to yourself. I am definitely a dog lover and don't blame the dog. I blame the inconsiderate people who own him.
